The Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA), formerly the Australian Institute of Librarians and Library Association of Australia, is the peak professional organisation for the Australian library and information services sector. Founded in 1937, its headquarters are in Canberra. ALIA publishes a quarterly scholarly journal, ''Journal of the Australian Library and Information Association'', and a bimonthly news magazine for members, ''INCITE''. The Association hosts a number of conferences which take place in different places around Australia. Higher education accreditation is a type of quality assurance and educational accreditation process under which services and operations of tertiary educational institutions or programs are evaluated to determine if applicable standards are met. If standards are met, accredited status is granted by the agency. Overview In most countries around the world, the function of educational accreditation for higher education is conducted by a government organization, such as a ministry of education. In the United States, however, the quality assurance process is independent of government and performed by private agencies. Canada takes a unique position, not allowing any accreditation by government or private agencies, causing some Canadian institutions to seek accreditation by American agencies. The Australian Museums and Galleries Association (AMaGA), formerly Museums Galleries Australia and Museums Australia, is the national professional organisation and peak council for museums and public art galleries in Australia. John Brudenall (librarian)
Michael John Brudenall (31 October 1938 – 27 January 2016) was an Australian librarian and library educator. He contributed to the development of library technician education and employment in Australia. He planned the Commonwealth Parliamentary Library for the new Parliament House building in Canberra and advocated for stronger collaboration between the parliamentary libraries in the Asia Pacific region. Early life Michael John Brudenall was born on 31 October 1938. He attended Melbourne High School and he moved from Melbourne to Canberra in 1960 to join the staff of the newly created National Library of Australia.He was one of 16 graduates selected Australia wide to train as professional librarians at the National Library. Patricia Gallaher
Patricia Evelyn Gallaher OAM (1937 – 11 December 2014) was an Australian librarian who established the Randolph Stow Young Writers award and promoted the arts in regional parts of Western Australia. Early life Gallaher was born in England in 1937. Career Gallaher began her working life as a laboratory technician in Sheffield. She emigrated to Australia and worked at the Defence Standards Laboratories in Alexandria, Sydney. Her first library job was at Mosman Public Library in Sydney. Moving a few years later to Western Australia, Gallaher worked in public libraries in regional areas for almost 30 years. She held positions in Paraburdoo and Karratha, and then for 20 years as the regional librarian for the City of Geraldton (1981-2001). Laurel Anne Clyde (7 February 1946 – 18 September 2005) was an Australian educator, teacher-librarian, author and academic who taught in colleges and universities in Australia and Canada, as well as in Iceland. She was known for her expertise in electronic resources and the Internet. Anne was also influential in the early adoption and evaluation of internet sites and online tools by teacher librarians. The online versions of the Australian Public Affairs Information Service (APAIS) subject index, and the Australian Public Affairs Full Text (APAFT) are part of the Informit database collection.
