The Album (Latyrx Album)
''The Album'' is the debut studio album by American hip-hop duo Latyrx. It was released on August 25, 1997, through Solesides Records. The recording sessions took place at Nash Studios in Oakland, The Glue Factory in San Francisco, Studio A at UC Davis college station KDVS, and Live Oak Studios in Berkeley. It was produced by Lyrics Born, DJ Shadow, and Chief Xcel. It features guest appearances from Blackalicious and John Tchicai, and contributions from Joyo Velarde and funk/jazz band Free Association. Quannum Projects, the rebranded and expanded version of SoleSides, reissued the album in 2002. At the 20th anniversary of ''The Album'', it was remastered and re-released with two bonus tracks via Real People. Critical reception Steve "Flash" Juon of ''RapReviews'' praised the album, saying it "takes crazy mad chances with hip-hop, stretching boundaries and the imagination" and is "built on solid skills". Latyrx
Latyrx ( ) is an American alternative hip-hop duo composed of Lateef and Lyrics Born. The duo originated from the Solesides collective at the University of California, Davis. History The founding members of SoleSides, including DJ Shadow and the future Blackalicious’ team, were involved in student radio and shared a similar approach to hip-hop. Lateef and Lyrics Born were initially recorded as solo artists under the name Asia Born. Lyrics Born released the first single on the Solesides label, “Send Them,” in early 1993. DJ Shadow contributed production to four of the album’s tracks (1, 3, 12, 13). The release was noted for its unconventional production choices and the contrasting vocal styles of the two MCs. Joyo Velarde
Joyo Velarde is a Filipino hip hop and soul singer. Her husband is Lyrics Born. She has been featured on numerous tracks by the Quannum Projects cohorts. Career Joyo Velarde's self-titled EP, ''Joyo Velarde'', was released in May 2009. She released the first studio album, ''Love and Understanding'', in February 2010. Timothy Jerome Parker (October 7, 1970 – June 18, 2021), better known by his stage name Gift of Gab, was an American rapper best known for performing in the Bay Area hip hop duo Blackalicious along with DJ Chief Xcel.
