Thalia Zedek
Thalia Zedek (born 1961) is an American singer and guitarist. Active since the early 1980s, she has been a member of several notable alternative rock groups, including Live Skull and Uzi (band), Uzi both of which, according to ''Spin (magazine), Spin'' magazine, "made big noise in the underground", and Come (American band), Come. Critic Heather Phares writes that Zedek's music can be defined by "the permanent, aching rasp in her voice, her guitar's bluesy bite, the startlingly clear-eyed lyrics about life and loss." Biography Zedek grew up in a Jewish family in the metropolitan area of Washington, D.C. She attended Springbrook High School in Maryland, where she played clarinet in the marching band under band director Charles Sickafus. Buffalo Bar
The Buffalo Bar was a music and arts venue located at 259 Upper Street, Highbury Corner, Islington, from 2000 until 2014. History The venue was situated beneath The Famous Cock Tavern, adjacent to Highbury & Islington station. The basement at 259 Upper Street had previously been a branch of Po Na Na nightclub, and before that, Club Down Under. The Buffalo Bar opened in 2000 and hosted performances by a large number of notable alternative and indie rock artists. ''Trust Not Those in Whom Without Some Touch of Madness'' is Thalia Zedek's third solo album, released under two months after ''Hell is in Hello''. Background In 2002, after Matador Records—which had released Zedek's debut solo album— was bought by Beggars Banquet, Zedek was dropped from Matador's roster. Therefore, ''Trust Not Those in Whom Without Some Touch of Madness'' was released in 2004 by Thrill Jockey (and Acuarela Records in Spain), which began the long-lasting and fruitful relationship between Zedek and Thrill Jockey. The album was recorded, engineered, and mixed by producer and one-time Arcade Fire drummer Howard Bilerman, who co-owns the Hotel2Tango recording studio at which it was recorded. Indie rock is a subgenre of rock music that originated in the United Kingdom, United States and New Zealand in the early to mid-1980s. Although the term was originally used to describe rock music released through independent record labels, by the 1990s it became more widely associated with the music such bands produced. Indigo Girls are an American folk rock music duet (music), duo from Atlanta, Georgia, United States, consisting of Amy Ray and Emily Saliers. The two met in Primary school, elementary school and began performing together as Secondary school, high school students in Decatur, Georgia, part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. ''Been Here and Gone'' is Thalia Zedek's debut solo album, following the demise of Come, her previous band. Background Released in 2001 by Matador and P-Vine Records, the album was produced by Bryce Goggin and Thalia Zedek at Higher Power Recording, Goggin's recording studio in a de-sanctified church along the Hudson River, south of Albany, NY. The recording of the album took place in March 2001. After the break up of Come, Zedek "wanted to play in a band where hecould hear erelf sing and not have to wear earplugs." She began playing solo live shows, singing in diverse styles with different collaborators, often including various covers. Chris Brokaw (born August 1, 1964) is an American musician, best known for his work with the bands Come (American band), Come and Codeine (band), Codeine. Life and career While studying at Oberlin College, Brokaw met many people who became figures on the American indie rock scene of the 1990s, among them Codeine (band), Stephen Immerwahr, with whom Brokaw formed Codeine, as well as Sooyoung Park of Bitch Magnet and Seam (band), Seam, John McEntire of Tortoise (band), Tortoise, and Liz Phair. Soon after graduating from Oberlin, Brokaw played drums for a number of bands, including 7 Or 8 Worm Hearts and G.G. Allin. Codeine is an American indie rock band formed in 1989 in New York City. They released two full-length albums—''Frigid Stars LP'' in 1990 and ''The White Birch (album), The White Birch'' in 1994. Although the group broke up in 1994 shortly after the release of ''The White Birch'', their subdued and melancholic style helped pioneer the then-nascent slowcore subgenre of indie rock.
