Texas–Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros Baseball
The UT Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros baseball team, or the UTRGV Vaqueros, is the varsity intercollegiate baseball team of the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, an NCAA Division I institution with several campuses in the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas, United States. UTRGV was formally founded in 2013 with the announced merger of the University of Texas–Pan American (UTPA), with its main campus in Edinburg, and the University of Texas at Brownsville (UTB) in Brownsville, with the merged university beginning operation in the 2015–16 school year. The Vaqueros compete in the Southland Conference since 2025 and play home games at UTRGV Baseball Stadium in Edinburg. They are coached by Derek Matlock. Prior to the merger, UTPA competed in Division I as the Texas–Pan American Broncs, while UTB, a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, had no baseball program. Southland Conference
The Southland Conference (SLC) is a collegiate athletic conference which operates in the South Central United States (specifically Texas and Louisiana). It participates in the NCAA's Division I for all sports; for football, it participates in the Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). The Southland sponsors 18 sports, 10 for women and eight for men, and is governed by a presidential Board of Directors and an Advisory Council of athletic and academic administrators. Chris Grant became the Southland's seventh commissioner on April 5, 2022. From 1996 to 2002, for football only, the Southland Conference was known as the Southland Football League. The conference's offices are located in the Dallas suburb of Frisco, Texas. Samford Bulldogs Football
The Samford Bulldogs football program is the intercollegiate American football team for Samford University located in Homewood, Alabama. The team competes at the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) level as a member of the Southern Conference (SoCon). Samford's first football team was fielded in 1902. The team was known as the Howard Bulldogs through the 1965 season when Howard College was renamed as Samford University. Howard was located in Birmingham, Alabama prior to 1957. Since 1958, the Bulldogs have played their home games at Pete Hanna Stadium, which now has a seating capacity of 6,700, in Homewood. The College World Series (CWS), officially the NCAA Men's College World Series (MCWS), is a baseball tournament held each June in Omaha, Nebraska. It is the culmination of the NCAA Division I baseball tournament—featuring 64 teams in the first round—which determines the champion of NCAA Division I level college baseball. The eight participating teams are split into two double-elimination brackets of four teams apiece, with the bracket winners playing in a best-of-three championship series. The tournament concluded with eight teams competing in the College World Series, a double-elimination tournament in its twenty-fifth year. Al Ogletree
Alfred H. Ogletree (February 5, 1930 – June 24, 2019) was an American baseball coach in NCAA Division I college baseball. Early life Ogletree was born in San Antonio, Texas. He attended school at Texas A&M University, graduating in 1952. Four years later, he earned a master's degree. He played in the minors for two years while also spending time in the Army as an officer for two years. Career He served as head coach at Dallas, Sul Ross State University, and the University of Texas–Pan American. He coached Dallas to an 82–45 record over seven years and coached Sul Ross State to a 50–46 record over three years, winning a NAIA District 8 North Zone championship with Dallas in 1964. His greatest success came with Pan-American, of which he served as head coach from 1969 to 1997. He was inducted into UTPA's inaugural Athletics Hall of Fame.
