Terry is an unincorporated community in Lawrence County, South Dakota, United States. History A post office called Terry was established in 1892, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1929. The community took its name from nearby Terry Peak. Martha Jane Cannary, the frontierswoman better known as Calamity Jane Martha Jane Cannary (May 1, 1852 – August 1, 1903), better known as Calamity Jane, was an American frontierswoman, sharpshooter, and storyteller. Lawrence County, South Dakota
Lawrence County is a county in the U.S. state of South Dakota. As of the 2020 United States Census, the population was 25,768. Its county seat is Deadwood. Lawrence County is coextensive with the Spearfish, SD Micropolitan Statistical Area, which is also included in the Rapid City-Spearfish, SD Combined Statistical Area. History Lawrence County was created January 11, 1875, and was organized in 1877. The county was named for "Colonel" John Lawrence, who came to the county as first treasurer in 1877. Lawrence had previously served in the Dakota Territorial Legislature, as a Sergeant at Arms for the United States House of Representatives, and a US Marshal for the Dakota territory. After retirement, he continued to act as county road supervisor and as an election judge. The title "Colonel" was honorary, bestowed by the governor of the Dakota Territory. Terry Peak

With an elevation of above sea level, it is the most prominent peak in the Northern Black Hills area, and the sixth highest summit in the range; the tallest is Black Elk Peak (formerly Harney Peak) at . The mountain was named for Alfred Howe Terry, who had explored the area. It was first used as a ski area in 1936 by the Bald Mountain Ski Club when a rope tow was installed. Martha Jane Cannary (May 1, 1852 – August 1, 1903), better known as Calamity Jane, was an American frontierswoman, sharpshooter, and storyteller. In addition to many exploits she was known for being an acquaintance of Wild Bill Hickok. Late in her life, she appeared in Buffalo Bill's Wild West show and at the 1901 Pan-American Exposition. She is said to have exhibited compassion to others, especially to the sick and needy. This facet of her character contrasted with her daredevil ways and helped to make her a noted frontier figure. She was also known for her habit of wearing men's attire.
