Tennis At The 1968 Summer Olympics – Exhibition Mixed Doubles
Since the 1968 Summer Olympics did not feature tennis as an official sport, two unofficial tournaments were held during the Games: a Demonstration tournament and an Exhibition tournament. The Exhibition tournament was played from 24 to 26 October 1968 on the clay courts of the Chapultepec Sports Center in Mexico City, Mexico. All matches were played at best-of-three sets; since the tiebreak rule wasn't implemented until the 1970s, a team had to win a set by a two-game margin in case of a 6–6 draw. Due to the short length of the tournament, no third-place match was played, and both semifinal losers received bronze medals. Soviets Zaiga Jansone and Vladimir Korotkov won the tournament by defeating American Peaches Bartkowicz and West German Ingo Buding 7–5, 6–4 in the final. Zaiga Jansone
Zaiga Jansone-Ivanova (born 24 January 1951) is a former Soviet Latvian tennis player and tennis coach. She was a five-time Soviet champion in women's doubles, 1973 Summer Universiade champion in women's doubles (all with Olga Morozova) and winner of the exhibition tennis event of 1968 Olympics in mixed doubles (with Vladimir Korotkov). Biography Zaiga Jansone was born in Riga in 1951. Her father Jānis was her first tennis coach, and in the following years she has also been coached by Serguey Andreev and future Russian Tennis Hall-of-famer Semyon Belits-Geiman. She was representing clubs Daugava (Riga), CSKA (Moscow) and ASK (Riga). Zaiga's best years in tennis encompassed the late 1960s and early 1970s. Helga Niessen Masthoff
Helga Niessen Masthoff (née Niessen; born 11 November 1941) is a former tennis player from West Germany. Her best Grand Slam singles tournament was when she reached the 1970 French Open final, losing to Margaret Court in straight sets. She won the German Open three consecutive years from 1972 through 1974, beating Martina Navratilova in the 1974 final, in three sets. Masthoff was the runner-up at that tournament in 1971, losing to Billie Jean King. Patricia Montaño (born 7 August 1952) is a Mexican former professional tennis player. Montaño, the 1968 Orange Bowl champion, is the sister of tennis players Emilio and Olga. J. Francisco Guzmán Carmigniani (born 24 May 1946), known as Pancho Guzmán, is an Ecuadorian former tennis player active in the 1960s and 1970s. Biography Guzmán, the son of a banker, began playing tennis at the age of seven and trained at the Guayaquil Tennis Club. He was 11 when he won his first national title and in 1961 was a finalist in the Orange Bowl. In 1963 he made his Davis Cup debut for Ecuador, for a tie against Trinidad and Tobago, aged only 17. María Eugenia Guzmán (8 September 1945 – March 1996) was an Ecuadorian former professional tennis player. Herbert Fitzgibbon (born July 14, 1942) is a former tennis player who was nationally ranked in the 1960s and 1970s. Fitzgibbon played four years of high school tennis for Garden City High School and never lost a match. He played collegiate tennis at Princeton University and was a gold and bronze medalist at the Olympic Games in Mexico City in 1968 when tennis was a demonstration sport. James Henry McManus (September 16, 1940 – January 18, 2011) was an American tennis player who reached the semifinals of the US Open men's doubles in 1968. Valerie Jean Bradshaw (née Ziegenfuss; June 29, 1949) is an American former female professional tennis player. She started as an amateur player at the beginning of the 1970s, then turned professional.
