Road Bicycle Racing
Road bicycle racing is the cycle sport discipline of road cycling, held primarily on Road surface, paved roads. Road racing is the most popular professional form of bicycle racing, in terms of numbers of competitors, events and spectators. The two most common competition formats are mass start events, where riders start simultaneously (though sometimes with a Handicapping, handicap) and race to a set finish point; and time trials, where individual time trial, individual riders or team time trial, teams race a course alone against the clock. Stage races or "tours" take multiple days, and consist of several mass-start or time-trial stages ridden consecutively. Kees Pellenaars
Cornelis Petrus "Kees" Pellenaars (10 May 1913 – 30 January 1988) was a Dutch road cyclist and coach. In 1934 he won the amateur road race at the world championships, which was the first world road title for the Netherlands. The same year he turned professional and won dozens of competitions over the next 16 years, including the six-day races of Paris (1936), Copenhagen (1937), Six Days of Ghent, Ghent (1938) and Brussels (1939). On 20 August 1950, during the Tour of Germany, Pellenaars hit an American military vehicle at high speed, and crashed so seriously that a Belgian newspaper published his obituary. He recovered, but retired from racing and focused on coaching. He had much success with the Dutch team at the Tour de France: in 1951 Wim van Est became the first Dutchman to wear the yellow jersey, and in 1953 the Netherlands won the team competition. Wim Van Est
Willem "Wim" van Est (25 March 1923 – 1 May 2003) was a Dutch racing cyclist. He is best known for being the first Dutch cyclist to wear the yellow jersey as leader of the general classification in the Tour de France of 1951, and for falling into a ravine while wearing it. Biography Van Est was born in the town of Fijnaart, in North Brabant, the 2nd child in a family of 16 children. His family was pushed into poverty in the aftermath of World War One and growing up he lived on a makeshift farm. During this time one of his brothers died at a very young age and his father had to make a coffin for the child, and ride several miles on his bike while carrying the coffin with his son inside to the local church to give the child a proper burial. During World War 2 the teenage Van Est began riding a considerable distance into Belgium smuggling tobacco and cheese which he would either sell or trade for soap, which he would return home with in order to sell on the Black Market.
