Ted Thomas (judge)
Sir Edmund Walter Thomas (born 1934) is a New Zealand jurist. He is a retired judge of the Court of Appeal of New Zealand and a former acting judge of the Supreme Court of New Zealand. Biography Born in 1934, Thomas was educated at Feilding High School, Feilding Agricultural High School and Victoria University of Wellington, Victoria University College graduating with a Bachelor of Arts, BA and Bachelor of Laws, LLB in 1956, and the higher doctorate Legum Doctor, LLD in 2009. He was admitted to the bar as a barrister and solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand, Supreme Court (later the High Court) of New Zealand. Following many years as a partner at New Zealand law firm Russell McVeagh, he became a barrister sole and was appointed List of King's and Queen's Counsel in New Zealand, Queen's Counsel in 1981. Court Of Appeal Of New Zealand
The Court of Appeal of New Zealand () is the principal intermediate appellate court of New Zealand. It is also the final appellate court for a number of matters. In practice, most appeals are resolved at this intermediate appellate level, rather than in the Supreme Court of New Zealand, Supreme Court. The Court of Appeal has existed as a separate court since 1862 but, until 1957, it was composed of judges of the High Court of New Zealand, High Court sitting periodically in panels. In 1957 the Court of Appeal was reconstituted as a permanent court separate from the High Court. It is located in Wellington. Background The background to the application to adjudicate Mr Taylor bankrupt was summarised by Justice Thomas,Mr Taylor's creditors, Mr and Mrs Greenwood, obtained a summary judgment against Mr Taylor on 17 April 1991 for $21,448.86. The summary judgment application had not been opposed. The judgment sum represented unpaid rent and outgoings for which Mr Taylor and his wife were liable under a lease which they had taken from Mr and Mrs Greenwood. The 2009 Special Honours in New Zealand were announced in August 2009 as a result of the reinstatement of the appellations of "Sir" and "Dame" to the New Zealand Royal Honours System by passing Special Regulation 2009/90 ''Additional Statutes of The New Zealand Order of Merit'', a legally binding regulation with the force of law in New Zealand. The effect of the change was that individuals who had been appointed as Principal Companions or Distinguished Companions of the New Zealand Order of Merit were given the option of accepting titular honours: Principal Companions could opt to become Knights or Dames Grand Companion, and Distinguished Companions could become Knights or Dames Companion. The New Zealand 1990 Commemoration Medal was a commemorative medal awarded in New Zealand in 1990 to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi, and was awarded to 3,632 people. Background The New Zealand 1990 Commemoration Medal was instituted by Royal Warrant of Queen Elizabeth II on 9 February 1990. It was to be awarded only during 1990 to about 3,000 people selected in recognition of the contribution they have made to some aspect of New Zealand life, especially the various 1990 celebrations.
