Te Uru Waitākere Contemporary Gallery
Te Uru Waitākere Contemporary Gallery (commonly known as Te Uru, formerly known as Lopdell House Gallery) is a contemporary art gallery located in Titirangi, Auckland. The gallery, which serves the West Auckland region, was originally opened within Lopdell House in 1986. Redevelopment The gallery closed in 2012 for a building project, with the new custom-built gallery, designed by Julie Stout of Mitchell & Stout Architects, opening on 1 November 2014. The building project received a warm critical reception and has received awards in the 2015 Auckland Architecture Awards Public Building and Heritage categories, and the 2015 New Zealand Architecture Awards Public Building category. Te Uru's inaugural director was Andrew Clifford, who was appointed in 2013. Clifford's departure was announced at the end of 2022, and he took on his next role as Director of the Sarjeant Gallery in March 2023, after serving as director for 10 years. Peter Alan Simpson (born 1942) is an academic, writer, literary critic, and former New Zealand politician of the Labour Party. Early life Simpson was born in Tākaka in 1942. From 1955 to 1959, he was educated at Nelson College, where he was a prefect and member of the school's 1st XV rugby union team in his final year. He gained a MA (Hons) from the University of Canterbury, and a PhD from the University of Toronto with a 1975 thesis titled ''Wordsworth to Hardy: lines of relationship and continuity in nineteenth century English poetry''. 2023 Auckland Anniversary Weekend Floods
Beginning on Friday, 27 January 2023, regions across the upper North Island of New Zealand experienced widespread catastrophic floods caused by heavy rainfall, with Auckland being the most significantly affected as the Auckland Anniversary Day, Auckland Anniversary holiday weekend began. Severe flash flooding occurred across Auckland from around 5:00pm on 27 January local time, after heavy rain in the afternoon. Flooding was widespread across the city, with West Auckland, New Zealand, West Auckland and the North Shore, New Zealand, North Shore being the worst affected areas. The National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research reported that an entire summer's worth of rain fell within one day in what it described as a 1-in-200-year event. Andy Leleisi'uao
Andy Leleisi’uao (b. 1969) is a New Zealand artist of Samoan heritage known for his modern and post-modern Pacific paintings and art. He was paramount winner at the 26th annual Wallace Art Awards in 2017 and awarded a Senior Pacific Artist Award at the Arts Pasifika Awards in 2021. Background Leleisi’uao was born in 1969 New Zealand and grew up in Māngere, South Auckland. He has one sister, his parents were both born in Samoa and are Pepe (Lalomauga, Upolu) and Tuifa’asisina Tinou'amea (Palauli, Savai'i). Leleisi'uao went to Māngere College and afterwards had some factory jobs. He studied at the Auckland University of Technology (AUT) School of Art and Design and received the first ever Pasifika Scholarship in 2000. Roy Good
Roy Good (born 1945, Timaru) is a New Zealand artist and designer known for his modern abstraction. Early life At age 12, Good's cartoons appeared in The Press, a newspaper in Christchurch. He attended art classes at the Canterbury College School of Arts. After taking a gap year post-high school, Good returned to the college to pursue an arts degree with a focus on painting. In 1966, Good relocated to Auckland to enrol in teacher's college, but he left before completing the year-long program (a placement in a high school made him realise that teaching younger students was not his calling). After spending time as a labourer for the railways, he was pleased to get back into art when he secured a position as a scenic artist at New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation. Penelope Judith Millar (born 1957) is a New Zealand artist, who lives in Auckland, New Zealand and Berlin, Germany. Education Millar received a BFA in 1980 and an MFA from Auckland University's Elam School of Fine Arts in 1983. As recipient of a Scholarship from the Italian Government in 1990, she spent a year in Turin, Italy, where she studied Italian arts of the 1960s and 1970s. Paintings Millar is known for her abstract acrylic and oil paintings. While her works may recall Abstract Expressionist paintings, Millar does not consider her paintings as being 'gestural'.
