Tatjana Gürbaca
Tatjana Gürbaca (born 1973) is a German opera director of Turkish and Slovenian descent. Based at the Staatstheater Mainz from 2011 to 2014, she directed operas internationally, including contemporary operas and world premieres. Life and career Gürbaca was born in Berlin in 1973 to a Turkish father and an Italian mother. Her father who had studied classical Turkish singing in Turkey had left the country in the 1960s for political reasons. Her mother belonged to the Slovenian minority in Italy. She loved music by Puccini and liked story-telling. The girl was trained in ballet, piano, cello and double bass. She attended a gymnasium with music focused on music and the arts. She played in orchestras, jazzbands, a klezmer group and a tango orchestra. Her music teacher brought her to the Deutsche Oper Berlin as an extra. She received German citizenship at age 17. ''Mavra'' () is a one-act comic opera composed by Igor Stravinsky, and one of the earliest works of Stravinsky's neo-classical period. The libretto, by Boris Kochno, is based on Alexander Pushkin's ''The Little House in Kolomna''. Mavra is about 25 minutes long, and features two arias, a duet, and a quartet performed by its cast of four characters. The opera has been characterised as both an homage to Russian writers, and a satire of bourgeois manners and the ''Romeo and Juliet'' subgenre of romance. Philip Truman has also described the music as satirising 19th-century comic opera. ''Lo speziale'' (''The Apothecary''), Hob. 28/3, is a three-act opera buffa by Joseph Haydn, with a libretto by Carlo Goldoni. A love triangle between the poor apprentice Mengone, the rich and assured dandy Volpino, and the local apothecary's ward, Grilletta, ''Lo speziale'' is a comedy of great warmth and ebullience. ''Lo speziale'' prefigures Mozart. It opens with an aria complaining about an apprentice apothecary's job, much like Leporello's opening aria in ''Don Giovanni''. ''La canterina'' (''The Songstress'' or ''The Diva''), Hob. XXVIII/2, is a short, two-act opera buffa by Joseph Haydn, the first one he wrote for Prince Esterhazy. Based on the intermezzo from the third act of Niccolò Piccinni's opera ''L'Origille'' (1760), it lasts about 50 minutes. It was written in 1766, and was premiered in the summer of that year. Tilman Michael (born 1975) is a German choral conductor. He has been choral conductor at Oper Frankfurt since 2014. There and in his previous position at the Nationaltheater Mannheim he led the opera chorus to be voted opera chorus of the year by the critics from ''Opernwelt''.
