Tar (band)
Tar was an American post-hardcore band, formed in 1988 in Chicago. Throughout their career they released four studio albums, two extended plays, and a number of singles before breaking up in 1995. They were known for their dry sense of humor. History The precursor to Tar was a hardcore punk outfit called Blatant Dissent, which formed in DeKalb, Illinois where singer/guitarist John Mohr and drummer Mike Greenlees were attending Northern Illinois University. Joining Mohr and Greenlees in Tar were original bassist Tim Mescher (only until 1991 and who also played for Snailboy), bassist Tom Zaluckyj and guitarist Mark Zablocki. Zaluckyj and Mohr played unique instruments, crafted of aluminum, designed by Ian Schneller of Specimen Products. The band released albums on the Amphetamine Reptile and Touch and Go Records labels before disbanding in 1995. Shellac (band)
Shellac was an American noise rock band from Chicago, Illinois, formed in 1992 by Steve Albini (guitar and vocals), Bob Weston (bass guitar and vocals) and Todd Trainer (drums and vocals). Their lineup remained consistent until Albini's death in May 2024. They have been classified as post-hardcore and math rock, but described themselves as a " minimalist rock trio." Biography Shellac formed in Chicago, Illinois, in 1992 as an informal collaboration between guitarist Steve Albini of noise rock trios Big Black and Rapeman, and drummer Todd Trainer from the band Breaking Circus and solo project Brick Layer Cake. Dischord Records is a Washington, D.C.–based independent record label specializing in punk rock. Jeff Dean (musician)
Jeff Dean is a punk rock musician and recording engineer based in Chicago, Illinois. He is best known for playing guitar in The Bomb with Jeff Pezzati of Naked Raygun, and Noise By Numbers with Dan Vapid of The Methadones. He currently plays in Deep Tunnel Project. In addition to these bands, he is lead guitarist for All Eyes West, Explode and Make Up, and Dead Ending. Dean has also played in Tomorrows Gone, Cleon's Down, Yesterday's Heroes, Zero in Trust, The Story So Far, Four Star Alarm and Certain People I Know. Additional bands he has played, toured, and written with include Faded Grey, Textbook, Horace Pinker, Pink Avalanche and Schizoid. He is a recording engineer at Million Yen Studio in Chicago, IL. Silkworm (band)
Silkworm was an American indie rock band active from 1987 to 2005 whose core members were Tim Midyett, Andy Cohen, and Michael Dahlquist. History Origins: 1985–1987 Founding members Tim Midyett (formerly Midgett), Joel RL Phelps, and Andy Cohen began writing and performing under the name Ein Heit in Missoula, Montana from 1985 to 1987. In 1987, they adopted the name Silkworm. Relocation: 1987–1990 They relocated to Seattle in 1990, where they met drummer Michael Dahlquist. During a radio interview on WNUR at Northwestern University, Steve Albini called in to contact the band. Comedy Minus One is an independent record label based in Princeton, New Jersey. It was founded in 2007 by Jon Solomon. Comedy Minus One picks up where an earlier Solomon label - My Pal God Records - left off, but with a more focused remit. The label, which takes its name from the 1973 Albert Brooks record of the same name, has so far concentrated on the output of a small group of post-hardcore and noise rock bands, but has also provided a distribution outlet for some previous releases. LP Record
The LP (from long playing or long play) is an Analog recording, analog sound storage medium, specifically a phonograph record format characterized by: a speed of revolutions per minute, rpm; a 12- or 10-inch (30- or 25-cm) diameter; use of the "microgroove" groove specification; and a vinyl (a copolymer of vinyl chloride acetate) composition disk. Introduced by Columbia Records in 1948, it was soon adopted as a new standard by the entire US record industry and, apart from a few relatively minor refinements and the important later addition of stereophonic sound in 1957, it remained the standard format for record albums during a period in popular music known as the album era.
