Tancredo Neves International Airport
Belo Horizonte/Confins–Tancredo Neves International Airport, formerly called Confins International Airport, is the primary international airport serving Belo Horizonte, located in the municipality of Confins, in the state of Minas Gerais. Since 2 September 1986, the airport is named after Tancredo de Almeida Neves (1910–1985), President-elect of Brazil. It is operated by BH Airport S.A. History The airport was built by Infraero and inaugurated in 1984. Its purpose was to lessen the congestion at Pampulha Airport, which at the time was operating at 120% of its capacity of 1.3 million passengers per year. It was expected that by 1990, passenger movement at Confins would be nearly 2 million passengers per year. However, it surpassed the 1 million passenger mark only 22 years later. Várzea Grande–Marechal Rondon International Airport is the airport serving Cuiabá, located in the municipality of Várzea Grande, in the state of Mato Grosso. Carajás Airport is the airport serving Parauapebas, Brazil, located in the Carajás Mining Complex. It is operated by AENA. History The airport was built by Companhia Vale do Rio Doce as a support the mining activities of Carajás Mine. It was commissioned on September 23, 1982. Presidente João Suassuna Airport is the airport serving Campina Grande, Brazil. Since August 2, 1960 it has been named after João Urbano Pessoa de Vasconcelos Suassuna (1886-1930), President of the State of Paraíba (at the time State Governors had the title of President) from 1924 to 1928. History The airport was commissioned in 1940 and served as a strategic technical stop on the route Rio de Janeiro-Miami, enabling faster flights as compared with the ones operated via the coast.
