Taiwan–Tuvalu Relations
Taiwan–Tuvalu relations are the bilateral relations between Taiwan and Tuvalu. Taiwan maintains an embassy in Funafuti, and Tuvalu maintains an embassy in Taipei. As of , Tuvalu is one of only 11 United Nations member states to have formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan. History Taiwan has maintained diplomatic relations with Tuvalu since 1979. According to ambassador Bikenibeu Paeniu, Tuvalu's decision to recognize Taiwan was largely due to the fact that "the deeply Christian country was wary of the communists." On 14 March 2013, Tuvalu opened an embassy in Taipei, its fifth agency installed in a foreign country. In June 2022, as a show of support for Taiwan, Tuvaluan foreign minister Simon Kofe withdrew from United Nations Ocean Conference opening after China blocked three Taiwanese members of the Tuvalu delegation from participating. Simon Kofe
Simon Kofe is a Tuvaluan politician. He was appointed as the Minister for Justice, Communication & Foreign Affairs, in the cabinet of Kausea Natano following the 2019 Tuvaluan general election. Early life He is the son of a Tuvaluan teacher at the University of the South Pacific (USP) in Suva, Fiji, Kofe was educated in a primary school of the Marist Brothers in Suva. He attended secondary school in various schools while his parents worked in several countries of Oceania. Legal career Kofe earned a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of the South Pacific in 2004, followed by a master's degree in international maritime law from the University of Malta in 2014. As the former senior magistrate of Tuvalu, Afele Kitiona, retired in mid-June 2014, Kofe was appointed as senior magistrate on 24 September 2014. Joseph Wu
Wu Jaushieh (; born October 31, 1954), also known by his English name Joseph Wu, is a Taiwanese political scientist and diplomat currently serving as secretary-general of the National Security Council since 2024. He was formerly the foreign minister from 2018 to 2024 and secretary-general to the presidential office of Tsai Ing-wen from 2017 to 2018. Kausea Natano
Kausea Natano (born 5 July 1957) is a politician who served as the Prime Minister of Tuvalu from 19 September 2019 to 26 February 2024. He represented Funafuti as a Member of Parliament. He was first elected in the 2002 Tuvaluan general election and served as an MP until he was unseated in the 2024 Tuvaluan general election. In his political career, Natano has also assumed significant roles, including Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Communications, during his tenure in the Cabinet led by former Prime Minister Willy Telavi. The 2017 United Nations Ocean Conference was a United Nations conference that took place on 5-9 June 2017 which sought to mobilize action for the conservation and sustainable use of the oceans, seas and marine resources. The Earth's waters are said to be "under threat as never before", with pollution, overfishing, and the effects of climate change severely damaging the health of our oceans. For instance as oceans are warming and becoming more acidic, biodiversity is becoming reduced and changing currents will cause more frequent storms and droughts. Every year around 8 million metric tons of plastic waste leak into the ocean and make it into the circular ocean currents.
