Tahir Elçi
Tahir Elçi (1966, Cizre – 28 November 2015) was a Kurds, Kurdish lawyer and the chairman of Diyarbakır Bar Association. Early life and education He went to primary and secondary school in Cizre and graduated from Dicle University in 1991. In 1993 he was a lawyer in Cizre, and a member of the Cizre Bar Association and defending people against the Turkish state at the European Commission of Human Rights (ECHR). Between the 10 December 1993 and 17 February 1994 he was in detention accused of links with the Kurdistan Workers' Party's armed wing. Professional career Between 1996 and 2006 he was active at the Diyarbakir Bar association as a manager and in 2012 he was elected its chairman. On 23 March 2014, he was the lawyer in the Kuşkonar massacre case in the European Court of Human Rights, ECHR, in which Turkey was condemned for massacring Kurdish civilians and blaming the PKK. Cizre
Cizre () is a city in the Cizre District of Şırnak Province in Turkey. It is located on the river Tigris by the Syria–Turkey border and close to the Iraq–Turkey border. Cizre is in the historical region of Upper Mesopotamia and the cultural region of Turkish Kurdistan. The city had a population of 130,916 in 2021. It is predominantly inhabited by Kurds. Cizre was founded as Jazirat Ibn ʿUmar in the 9th century by Taghlib#Abbasid period, Al-Hasan ibn Umar, List of rulers of Mosul, Emir of Mosul, on a manmade island in the Tigris. ''Milliyet'' ( Turkish for "''nationality''") is a daily newspaper published in Istanbul, Turkey. History and profile ''Milliyet'' came to publishing life at the Nuri Akça press in Babıali, Istanbul as a daily private newspaper on 3 May 1950. Its owner was Ali Naci Karacan. Şerafettin Elçi
Şerafettin Elçi (14 March 1938 – 25 December 2012) was a Kurdish lawyer, politician, government minister and statesman in Turkey. He was one of the pioneers of Kurdish politics in Turkey. Early years Şerafettin Elçi was born in Cizre, Şırnak Province on 14 March 1938. He finished primary education in his hometown. After completing secondary education in Mardin, he studied law at Ankara University, Law School and graduated in 1964. During his university years, he was tried in the "Case of Kurdish Propagandists" (), so-called "Case of the 49s" under accusation of making Kurdish propaganda. After graduation, he pursued a career as a lawyer in Cizre. Selahattin Demirtaş (born 10 April 1973) is a Kurdish politician, lawyer and author. He was the co-leader of the left-wing pro- Kurdish Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP), serving alongside Figen Yüksekdağ from 2014 to 2018. Selahattin Demirtaş announced that he left politics after the May 2023 elections. Demirtaş was the presidential candidate of the HDP in the 2014 presidential election, coming in third place. He led the HDP to gather 13.1% at the June 2015 parliament elections and 10.7% in the snap elections in November 2015, coming 4th in each election. The Firat News Agency (ANF) (, ) is a Kurdish news agency that gathers and broadcasts news from the Middle East, broadly concerning Kurdish matters. The news agency has offices in Amsterdam and journalists around the world. It has been variously described as pro-Kurdish, pro- PKK, or PKK-affiliated.
