TCDD TVS2000
The TÜVASAŞ 2000, more commonly known as TVS2000, is a series of intercity railcars built by TÜVASAŞ for the Turkish State Railways between 1993 and 2005. They were built in order to revive TCDD's failing image in the early 1990s, for use on the Capital Express. Today they are the most common railcars in Turkey. History TCDD's image was failing greatly in the early 1990s and its Ankara−Istanbul mainline was losing market-share to roads. People mostly chose buses over rail for travel, because TCDD's fleet of railcars were aging quickly. The railways' premier train at the time, the Fatih Express was using Black-Red Intercity cars, which were noisy, uncomfortable and without air conditioning which made the interior very hot during the summer times. During winter times, the steam heater on board the cars always broke down or malfunctioned causing problems. Turkish Wagon Industry, Inc. ( tr, Türkiye Vagon Sanayi Anonim Şirketi), more commonly known as TÜVASAŞ, is a railcar manufacturer based in Adapazarı. TÜVASAŞ is responsible for the construction, refurbishment and repair of railcars for the Turkish State Railways, and is a 100% shareholder of the Turkish State Railways, reporting directly to the Turkish Ministry of Transport. The company was founded in 1951 as Vagon Tamir Atölyesi (Wagon Repair Shop) in order to repair existing railcars of TCDD's fleet. Today, TÜVASAŞ has become the largest railcar manufacturer in the Middle East. The headquarters are in the Adapazarı Plant in Mithatpaşa, a neighborhood of Adapazarı. TÜVASAŞ and two other rail companies (TÜLOMSAŞ and TÜDEMSAŞ) are in the process of merging under the umbrella of one company, TÜRASAŞ. In rail transport, head-end power (HEP), also known as electric train supply (ETS), is the electrical power distribution system on a passenger train. The power source, usually a locomotive (or a generator car) at the front or 'head' of a train, provides the electricity used for heating, lighting, electrical and other 'hotel' needs. The maritime equivalent is hotel electric power. A successful attempt by the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway in October 1881 to light the passenger cars on the London to Brighton route heralded the beginning of using electricity to light trains in the world. History Oil lamps were introduced in 1842 to light trains. Economics drove the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway to replace oil with coal gas lighting in 1870, but a gas cylinder explosion on the train led them to abandon the experiment.
