Édouard Surcouf
Édouard Surcouf (1862–1938) was a French engineer, maker and pilot of dirigibles, and industrialist. Biography Astra triplane, participant at the military concours d'aviation, 1911 Édouard Surcouf, an aeronautics enthusiast from an early age, made his first flight in a hot-air balloon in 1879 at the age of 17. The following year, 1880, he started as an apprentice at the "Grands Ateliers Aérostatiques du Champ-de-Mars", the biggest aeronautic manufacturer at the end of the 19th century. He collaborated with engineers Eugène Godard, his brother Louis Godard and Gabriel Yon. In 1889 he was named president of the School of Aeronautics. With Gabriel Yon he published a reference work, ''Aérostats et aérostation militaire à l'Exposition universelle de 1889'' (éditions Bernard et Cie., Paris, 1889). Jacques Surcouf
Jacques M R Surcouf (1873–1934) was a French entomologist. He held the title of baron and may have been of corsair descent (see Robert Surcouf). From at least 1906–1911, he was head of zoology at the colonial laboratory of the Paris National Museum of Natural History. He published a number of notable studies, largely on the subject of flies. In 1909 he published a description of four new species of horse-fly (Tabanidae) from India and Assam with Gertrude Ricardo, a scientist from the British Museum. Marie Surcouf
Marie Surcouf (19 May 1863 – 11 March 1928) was a French balloonist and feminist. In 1906, she was the first French woman to earn an aeronautical balloon pilot's license and later that year she became the first French woman to pilot a balloon flight with an all-woman crew. Surcouf founded the women's aeronautical club La Stella and served as its President. Early life and marriages Marie Valentine Nelly Bayard was born on 19 May 1863 at Ham ( Somme) the daughter of Félicie (née Pollet) and Ernest Julien Bayard. On 7 February 1882, she married Alberic Roussel (1853–1904), a medical doctor. They had two children: Pierre Roussel, (9 – 22 April 1886) and André Roussel (1888–1968). Nicolas Surcouf
Nicolas Surcouf ( 1770, Saint-Malo – 1848) was a French privateer. He was the brother and lieutenant of one of France's most famous and successful privateers, Robert Surcouf. Nicholas was the second eldest of four brothers, and Robert the second youngest. Career In 1798 Nicholas sailed as second captain to Robert in the ''Clarisse''. On 3 January 1800, she detected two American 16-carronade ships forming a line of battle, which Surcouf engaged.Rouvier, p.449 ''Clarisse'' raked the rear-most ship, the ''Louisa'', and boarded her, while simultaneously firing a broadside on the other ship, ''Mercury'', which attempted to rescue her mate. Nicolas led a 30-man boarding party to seize ''Louisa'', while ''Mercury'' escaped. ''Clarisse'' could not give chase, her bowsprit having been destroyed in a collision with ''Louisa''. Robert Surcouf
Robert Surcouf (12 December 1773 – 8 July 1827) was a French privateer and slave trader who operated in the Indian Ocean between 1789 and 1801, and again from 1807 to 1808, capturing over 40 prizes. Surcouf (opéra Comique)
''Surcouf'' is a French opéra comique in three acts and a prologue, music by Robert Planquette, libretto by Henri Chivot and Alfred Duru, premiered on 6 October 1887 at the Théâtre des Folies-Dramatiques in Paris. It ran for a modestly successful 96 performances. An English version was given in London at the Prince of Wales Theatre in January 1889, under the title ''Paul Jones'', in an adaptation by H. B. Farnie. This version did better at the box-office than the original Paris production, running in the West End theatre, West End for most of 1889, and being staged subsequently around the British Isles and in Australia and the US. Background and first performance Planquette had come to national and international notice ten years earlier, with his opéra comique ''Les cloches de Corneville'' (1877), which broke box-office records in Paris and London.
