Barry Steers
Ian Barry Connell Steers (January 15, 1927 – November 20, 2011) was a Canadian diplomat and business consultant. Steers served as the Canadian Ambassador to Japan from 1981 to 1989, Ambassador to Brazil from 1971 to 1976, as well as Canada's first Commissioner to Bermuda from 1976 to 1979. He later became the founding director of the Japan Society following his retirement from his diplomatic career. Biography Early life Steers was born and raised in London, Ontario. His father died when he was just seven years old and he was raised by his mother. Steers was the grandson of Canadian Colonel W. G. Coles. George Steers (August 15, 1819 – September 25, 1856) was a designer of yachts best known for the famous racing yacht ''America''. He founded a shipyard with his brother, George Steers and Co, and died in an accident just as he was landing a major contract to build boats for the Russian Czar. Early life George Steers was born in Washington, D.C., USA, in 1819. His father, Henry Steers, was engaged as Naval Constructor for the U.S. Government. George never learned the trade of ship carpenter, but rather built vessels based on the design concepts he worked out for himself in his youth, growing up as a shipbuilder's son. Henry Steers (1779 in Dartmouth, England – 1850 in New York, USA) was a prominent nineteenth-century American shipbuilder of English descent, and the ancestor of a line of important businessmen in various boatbuilding and maritime construction concerns. Steers married Ann Rich on December 2, 1803, and they had thirteen children together, including a daughter Ann Steer who remained in England, and a son Henry Torring Steer. Henry Steers (September 14, 1832 in New York City – September 29, 1903 in Westport, Massachusetts) was the son of James Rich Steers, nephew of George Steers, proprietor of Henry Steers' Ship Yard ( George & James R. Steers). Education He was educated in New-York with admission into a free Academy. At the age of 16, he worked in the ship yard of his father and uncle, at George & James R. Steers. He served as a regular apprenticeship and moved from a grindstone boy to a foreman. Henry Steers' shipyard In 1857, Steers started his shipyard in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, on the East River opposite New York City. The shipyard was between Green and Huron Streets. He designed and built most of the boats of the Pacific Mail Steamship Company. He built several yachts and pilot boats. Hugh Auchincloss Steers (June 12, 1962 – March 1, 1995) was an American painter whose work is in the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Walker Art Center, and the Denver Art Museum. He died of AIDS at the age of 32. Early life Steers was born on June 12, 1962, to Nina Gore Auchincloss and Newton Steers. He was the second of three children born to his parents. James Rich Steers
James Rich Steers (October 15, 1808 – April 16, 1896) was an American yacht builder and politician. He founded the George Steers and Co shipyard with his brother, George Steers. Career Steers was born in Plymouth, England. His father, Henry Steers, was connected to the Construction Department of the Royal Naval Dockyards at Plymouth until 1815. He moved the family to the United States in 1817, including James and brother George Steers (1819-1856). In 1826 Steers was involved with his father in partially successful efforts to recover items from the sunken British cruiser HMS Hussar in the Hell Gate area of New York Harbor. In 1830 he became superintendent of the ship building firm Smith & Dimon. Beginning work under his father on the 500 ton steamer Governor Walcott, Steers soon became a shipbuilder in his own right.
