State Highway 79 (Oklahoma)
State Highway 79 (abbreviated SH-79 or OK-79) is a state highway in Jefferson County, Oklahoma. It runs for as a continuation of Texas State Highway 79 to U.S. Highway 70 on the outskirts of Waurika. It has no lettered spur routes. SH-79 was first commissioned in 1938, and has had the same route since then. Route description Oklahoma's State Highway 79 begins where Texas's State Highway 79 crosses over the Red River from Clay County, Texas into Jefferson County, Oklahoma. The bridge over the river is a multiple-span pony truss bridge. Upon reaching the shore, the highway continues on a northeast trajectory, rising out of the Red River valley. The highway then comes to an end at US-70 on the southwest outskirts of Waurika. History State Highway 79 is first shown on the April 1939 state highway map. Waurika, Oklahoma
Waurika is the county seat of Jefferson County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 2,064 at the 2010 census, a 4.36 percent decrease from 2,158 at the 2000 census. An article from 1985 in ''The Oklahoman'' claimed that Waurika promoted itself as "The Parakeet Capital of the World". It gave no explanation for using this slogan. The Waurika Chamber of Commerce website in 2020 echoes that the town was "once a parakeet paradise," but currently seems to be promoting the motto ''On The Trail, By The Lake'', complete with a logo of a cowboy bronc-riding a fish. City name The name is the anglicized version of the Comanche compound ''woarɨhka'' ("worm eater") from ''woa'' ("worm") + ''tɨhka'' ("eat") and presumably refers to early European settlers whose plowing humorously resembled digging for worms. Texas State Highway 79
State Highway 79 (SH 79) is a state highway in the U.S. state of Texas that runs from Throckmorton to the Oklahoma state line near Byers. Route description SH 79 begins at an intersection with US 183/ US 283 in Throckmorton. The highway runs in an east-west direction until FM 926, east of Elbert. The highway turns northeast, running to Olney and Archer City. The highway enters Wichita Falls and almost immediately begins an overlap with US 281 on the Henry S. Grace Freeway. At the interchange with US 82/ US 287, US 281 travels north to downtown while SH 79 travels to the east. Shortly after joining US 82/287, SH 79 leaves the highways and runs on the eastern edge of the city as the Waurika Freeway.
