Stanstead, Quebec
Stanstead is a town in the Memphrémagog Regional County Municipality in the Estrie region of Quebec, located on the Canada–United States border across from Derby Line, Vermont. The Town of Stanstead was created in 1995 by the merger of the former villages of Stanstead Plain and Beebe (formerly Beebe Plain) and the Town of Rock Island. It is not to be confused with the township of Stanstead, which is nearby although not directly adjacent (the municipality of Ogden lies in between). Not only is Stanstead home to the Haskell Free Library and Opera House—the only heritage building deliberately constructed straddling the border between both countries—it also features Canusa Street, one of a number of streets in the world where the country border corresponds to the middle line marker, effectively making across-the-street neighbors residents of two countries. Stanstead, Quebec (township)
Stanstead is a township municipality of about 1,100 people in the Memphrémagog Regional County Municipality in the Estrie region of Quebec. It is not to be confused with the city of Stanstead, which is nearby although not directly adjacent (the municipality of Ogden lies in between). Formally, the township consists of two villages: Fitch Bay (founded in 1855) and Georgeville (founded in the 1890s). Both villages formed as a result of English-speaking migrants from the United States state of Vermont until borderline customs stations were established after 1920. Stanstead (electoral District)
Stanstead was a federal electoral district in Quebec, Canada, that was represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1867 to 1968. It was created by the ''British North America Act'', 1867. It consisted initially of the Townships of Stanstead, Barnston, Hatley, Barford, and Magog East and West. In 1924, it was redefined to exclude the part of the municipality of St. Herménégilde lying in the township of Hereford. In 1947, it was redefined to consist of: * the county of Stanstead, (except the municipality and the village of St. Herménégilde), and the towns of Coaticook and Magog; * the town of Lennoxville and the south-eastern parts of the county of Sherbrooke, and the municipality of Compton and the villages of Compton and Waterville. Stanstead was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly of the Parliament of the Province of Canada, in Canada East. It was south-east of Montreal, in the Eastern Townships. Created in 1841, it was based on the previous electoral district of the same name for the Legislative Assembly of Lower Canada. Stanstead was represented by one member in the Legislative Assembly. It was abolished in 1867, upon the creation of Canada and the province of Quebec. Stanstead, Suffolk
Stanstead is a village and civil parish in Suffolk, England. The name Stanstead comes from the Old English for "Stony place". Located off the B1066, it is around from Sudbury, and is part of Babergh district. It is about from Glemsford, from Hadleigh, and from Lavenham. Etymology The name Stanstead is Anglo Saxon for "stony place" and it is easy to appreciate how this came about when viewing the surrounding fields, particularly in the lower part of the village, which are strewn with glacial flint. There is much evidence of earlier Iron Age and Roman settlements in the surrounding area. Geography Stanstead is situated in Glem Valley to the north east of Sudbury. Stanstead Abbotts (alternatively Stanstead Abbots) is a village and civil parish in the district of East Hertfordshire, Hertfordshire, England; it lies on the county boundary with Essex. At the 2001 census, the parish had a population of 1,983. The village is situated approximately south-southeast of Ware, southeast of Hertford, north-northeast of Hoddesdon and west of Harlow. The village is separated from the village of Stanstead St Margarets by the River Lea. History Name and origins The village's name was recorded as "Stanstede" at the time of the Domesday Survey in the late eleventh century. The Stanstead
The Stanstead is a historic apartment building located at 19 Ware Street in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The three-story Richardsonian Romanesque building was built in 1887, and is an uncommon brick rendition of a triple=decker, more typically a wood-frame construction, that was just becoming popular in Cambridge. The architects, J. R. & W. P. Richards, also designed The Jarvis, another early brick apartment house in the city.
