John Carruthers Stanly
John Carruthers Stanly (1774-1845) was one of the largest slave owners in North Carolina and the wealthiest free black resident. Life and career Stanly was the illegitimate son of privateer John Wright Stanly and half-brother to U.S. Congressman John Stanly. He became known as one of the largest slave owners in North Carolina and the wealthiest free black resident. Even though he himself was born a slave, Stanly had used his intelligence and family ties to become a successful entrepreneur, land developer, and plantation owner. In fact, Stanly "became not only the largest slave owner in Craven County, and one of the largest in North Carolina, but he owned more than twice as many slaves as the second largest free Negro slave owner in the South." Stanly County is a county in the U.S. state of North Carolina. As of the 2020 census, the population was 62,504. Its county seat is Albemarle. Stanly County comprises the Albemarle, NC Micropolitan Statistical Area, which is also included in the Charlotte-Concord, NC-South Carolina Combined Statistical Area. History The site of modern-day Stanly County was originally peopled by small tribes of hunter-gatherers and Mound Builders whose artifacts and settlements have been dated back nearly 10,000 years. Large-scale European settlement of the region came in the mid-18th century via two primary waves: immigrants of Dutch, Scots-Irish and German descent moved from Pennsylvania and New Jersey seeking enhanced religious and political tolerance, while immigrants of English backgrounds came to the region from Virginia and the Cape Fear River Basin in Eastern North Carolina. Edward Stanly
Edward W. Stanly (January 10, 1810 – July 12, 1872) was an American lawyer and politician. He was a North Carolina politician and orator who represented the southeastern portion of the state in the United States House of Representatives for five terms. In 1857, Stanly ran for Governor of California, but lost to John B. Weller. Politicians of the mid-nineteenth century remarked that Stanly bore a strong physical resemblance to William H. Seward, though this resemblance lessened over time. Biography Stanly was born in New Bern, North Carolina, on January 10, 1810. He was a son of U.S. Representative John Stanly of New Bern and a cousin of U.S. Senator George Edmund Badger. John Stanly (politician)
John Stanly (April 9, 1774 – August 2, 1834) was a Federalist U.S. Congressman from North Carolina between 1801 and 1803 and again between 1809 and 1811. He was the father of Edward Stanly and rear admiral Fabius Stanly, and the father-in-law of General Walker Keith Armistead. Early life Stanly, the son of John Wright Stanly, was born in New Bern, North Carolina, and educated by private tutors before attending Princeton University. He studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1799. Career After practicing law and serving as a clerk and master in equity, Stanly was elected to the North Carolina House of Commons in 1798 and 1799. In 1800, Stanly was elected as a Federalist to the 7th United States Congress (March 4, 1801 – March 3, 1803); he served again in the 11th Congress (March 4, 1809 – March 3, 1811) before returning to the practice of law. Fabius Maximus Stanly (December 15, 1815 – December 5, 1882) was a rear admiral of the United States Navy, who served during the Mexican–American War and the American Civil War. Early life Fabius Maximus Stanly was born on December 15, 1815, in New Bern, North Carolina to John Stanly. His father was the speaker of the North Carolina House of Commons and U.S. Representative from North Carolina. His grandfather was John Wright Stanly, a veteran of the American Revolutionary War. Career Stanly was appointed midshipman on December 20, 1831. He sailed on the frigate USS ''Constellation'' from 1832 to 1834.
