Srpenica
Srpenica (; it, Serpenizza) is a village on the right bank of the Soča River in the Municipality of Bovec in the Littoral region of Slovenia. It includes the hamlet of Brezovo, which was abandoned after the Second World War. Name Srpenica was attested in written records in 1496 as ''Sterpeniza''. The name is probably derived from a Romance reflex of the Latin word ''stirps'' 'tree, bush, root', which is preserved in Italian ''sterpo'' 'bushes, roots that have died off' and in Ladin ''šterp'' 'brambles, brush litter'. A less likely theory derives the name from the Ladin common noun ''stirpe'' 'sterile cow'. History From the mid-18th century onward, many residents of the village made a living by peddling. Others traditionally worked outside the village as seasonal labor. Nearly the entire village was destroyed by a fire in 1905, after which 10 houses were not rebuilt. Lucy Christalnigg
Countess Lucy Christalnigg von und zu Gillitzstein, née Lucy Bellegarde, was born on 24 June 1872 in Klingenstein (now part of Blaustein) in the Kingdom of Württemberg, and died on 10 August 1914 in Srpenica, County of Gorizia and Gradisca (now in Slovenia). She was married to Count Oskar Christalnigg, a Carinthian aristocrat and Slovene patriot. She was one of the first female drivers in the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, living sometimes in Klagenfurt (now in Austria) and sometimes in Gorizia (now in Italy). She was also a racing driver, winning the 1907 ''Wanderpreis'' of the Carinthian Automobile Club in an Itala car. She became the first victim on the World War I Isonzo Front when she was shot (possibly by mistake) on 10 August 1914 at a checkpoint in Srpenica (near Bovec) while on a mission for the Red Cross. Municipality Of Bovec
The Municipality of Bovec ( or ; sl, Občina Bovec) is a municipality in northwestern Slovenia. Its center is the town of Bovec. , its mayor is Valter Mlekuž. Geography The northern parts of the municipality up the Trenta Valley to the peaks of Mts. Mangart, Jalovec, and Triglav is located within Triglav National Park, but not Bovec itself. Two of the most important mountain passes in the Julian Alps are located in the Municipality of Bovec: the Predil Pass on the border between Slovenia and Italy in the northwest, and the Vršič Pass in the northeast, which connects the Soča Valley to Kranjska Gora in the neighbouring Slovenian region of Upper Carniola.
