James Wani Igga
James Wani Igga (born 1949) is a South Sudanese who was the second vice president of South Sudan. He was speaker of the National Legislative Assembly from 2011 to 2013 and secretary general of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement. On 30 May 2020, he tested positive for COVID-19. Early life Igga was born in 1949. He is variously described to stem from the Bari and Zande ethnic groups and he is a Roman Catholic. He studied economics in Cairo. Civil war years Igga joined the South Sudanese rebels in 1985, training in Cuba and Ethiopia. He rose rapidly through the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) ranks, and, by 1987, had the rank of major and commanded the Shakus Battalion. Isaiah Kulang
Isaiah Kulang Mabor Deng Dak Anguany (1930 – 2015) was a South Sudanese politician who was Minister for Communications, Transport and Roads and member of the People's Regional Assembly, in the capital of Juba, serving as Speaker of the House between 1979 and 1980. Kulang was a prominent member of the Southern Front by then and in the late 1980s he participated actively in founding the United Sudan African Party (USAP). In a 1989 coup by the National Islamic Front, Kulang was arrested and detained for over a month where he was tortured in prison. After his release, the Al Bashir government offered him a state minister position in the Ministry of Social Welfare, which Kulang strongly rejected. Kulang was the chairman of the Specialized Committee for Social Service and Natural Resources in the Council of States when he died on 1 January 2015 in Khartoum, Sudan. Dr. Lam Akol Ajawin, is a South Sudanese politician of Shilluk descent. He is the current leader of National Democratic Movement (NDM) party. He is a former high-ranking official in the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA), and subsequently became the Foreign Minister of Sudan from September 2005 to October 2007, when the Khartoum government offered the SPLA several other key ministries as part of a peace agreement. Early life Akol was born on 15 July 1950 in Athidhwoi, Upper Nile. He received a Ph.D. in chemical engineering from Imperial College London and taught at the University of Khartoum. Democratic Change (Arabic: التغيير الديمقراطي), also known as DC, formerly Sudan People's Liberation Movement - Democratic Change, is a political party in the Republic of South Sudan. It currently has 4 representatives in the National Legislative Assembly, South Sudan's Legislature, making it the second largest party in South Sudan after the SPLM. The party was founded in June 2009 by Lam Akol to compete in the Sudanese general election, 2010 and act as an alternative to the ruling SPLM. Paulino Matip Nhial
Paulino Matip Nhial (1942 – 22 August 2012), or Matiep Nhial, was a military leader and politician in South Sudan. Early career Paulino belonged to the Bul section of the Nuer people. He joined the Anyanya separatist force during the First Sudanese Civil War (1955–1972), but after the peace agreement of 1972 he did not join the Sudanese army. In 1975 he again became a rebel in Bilpam and moved to Ethiopia. The Second Sudanese Civil War started in 1983, and was to continue until 2005. Paulino became a member of Anyanya II, and in 1985 returned to Unity State (Western Upper Nile), armed and supported by the government. He was opposed to the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) which had attacked Ananya II in 1983. South Sudan Defense Force
The South Sudan People's Defence Forces (SSPDF), formerly the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA), is the army of the Republic of South Sudan. The SPLA was founded as a guerrilla movement against the government of Sudan in 1983 and was a key participant of the Second Sudanese Civil War, led by John Garang. After Garang's death in 2005, Salva Kiir was named the SPLA's new Commander-in-Chief. As of 2010, the SPLA was divided into divisions of 10,000–14,000 soldiers. Following the Comprehensive Peace Agreement in 2005, the last remaining large and well-equipped militia, the South Sudan Defence Forces (SSDF), under General Paulino Matiep, signed an agreement with Kiir known as the Juba Declaration, which amalgamated the two forces under the SPLA banner. Dr. Toby Maduot Parek (1936-May 24, 2012), was the chairman of the Sudan African National Union (SANU), a member of parliament in the government of southern Sudan (GOSS) Legislative Assembly, and a member of the Sudanese Group for Human Rights (SGHR). Life Toby Maduot was born in Rualbet in Tonj North County in 1936, and after early studies in his native Tonj and secondary school at Ahfad in Omdurman, he completed his medical training at Charles University in Czechoslovakia. Following his return from Eastern Europe in 1965, he worked as a medical doctor in central Sudan and Khartoum, and then joined politics as a SANU member under the leadership of late William Deng Nhial Mabuoch.
