South Sudan At The 2016 Summer Olympics
South Sudan competed at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 5 to 21 August 2016. South Sudan had been an independent nation since 2011, but its civil war had delayed its membership with the International Olympic Committee until 2015, making 2016 its first official appearance at the Olympic Games. The country was offered three universality placements in athletics, as no South Sudanese athletes met the Olympic qualifying standards prior to the Games. Three athletes, two men and one woman, competed in three track and field events, but did not win any medals. The sole woman, Margret Rumat Hassan, was given a spot eight days prior to the start of the Games that had been allotted previously to Mangar Makur Chuot. This change was against the advice of the South Sudan Athletics Federation and was due allegedly to pressure from Samsung, for whom Hassan had appeared in an advertisement. South Sudan National Olympic Committee
The South Sudan National Olympic Committee is the National Olympic Committee representing South Sudan. It was founded in Juba on 8 June 2015, and became a full member of the International Olympic Committee and the Olympic Movement on 2 August 2015. The theme of the June meeting was "Let's build peace and unity through sport", reflecting the ongoing South Sudanese Civil War. The founding president is Lt-Gen. Wilson Deng Kuoirot. South Sudan Football Association
The South Sudan Football Association (S.S.F.A.) is the governing body of football in South Sudan. It was established in April 2011 and is an affiliate of CECAFA, CAF and FIFA. In club football, the SSFA oversee the South Sudan Football Championship, South Sudan Premier League, the national cup and Super Cup. Formation In April 2011, the Government of South Sudan's (GOSS) minister for Youth, Sports and Recreation, Makuac Teny Youk issued a ministerial order establishing the Provisional Football Association. Kakuma
Kakuma is a town in northwestern Turkana County, Kenya. It is the site of a UNHCR refugee camp, established in 1992. The population of Kakuma town was 60,000 in 2014, having grown from around 8,000 in 1990. In 1991, the camp was established to host unaccompanied minors who had fled the war in Sudan and from camps in Ethiopia. It was estimated that there were 12,000 "lost boys and girls" who had fled here via Egypt in 1990/91. Kakuma is situated in the second poorest region in Kenya and as a result of this poverty, there are ongoing tensions between the refugees and the local community that has occasionally resulted in violence. Compared to the wider region, the Kakuma camp has better health facilities and a higher percentage of children in full-time education, which resulted in a general notion that the refugees were better off than the locals. She competed as part of the Refugee Olympic Team at the 2016 Summer Olympics. Early life Lohalith was born in South Sudan. She and her family slept in the brush to avoid being found during raids. Rose Nathike Lokonyen (born 24 February 1995) is a track and field athlete from South Sudan, but who later lived and trained in Kenya. Early life Lokonyen was born in South Sudan. Her father is a soldier and she has four younger siblings. When she was 10, Lokonyen and her family fled on foot from soldiers in their village of Chukudum. The family then crowded into the back of a truck and made their way to Kakuma refugee camp in northwest Kenya. Her parents left the Kakuma in 2008 but left Lokonyen and her siblings at the refugee camp. When she reached high school, while still living in the refugee camp, Lokonyen began running as a pastime. Paulo Amotun Lokoro (born 1 January 1992) is a South Sudanese track and field athlete now living in Kenya. He specializes in the 1500 metres event. Yiech Pur Biel (born 1 January 1995) is a track and field athlete and UNHCR goodwill ambassador originally from Nasir, South Sudan, but now living and training in the United States. He was selected by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to compete for the Refugee Olympic Team in the 800 m event at the 2016 Summer Olympics. He placed last in his heat. In 2005 he fled from his home town of Nasir in Sudan to escape a civil war. After living in the Kakuma Refugee Camp for 10 years, he started running competitively in 2015. James Nyang Chiengjiek (born March 2, 1992) is a runner originally from South Sudan, but now living and training in Kenya. He was selected by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to compete for the Refugee Olympic Team (ROT) at the 2016 Summer Olympics. He placed last in his 400 m heat. He was also qualified to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics ROT, and placed last in his 800 m heat after tripping due to a fellow competitor's involuntary touch.
