South African Australians ( af, Suid-Afrikaanse Australiërs) are citizens or residents of Australia who are of South African descent. According to the 2016 Australian census, 162,450 Australian residents were born in South Africa, making up 0.7% of the country's population, while 118,960 residents claimed "South African" ancestry, and another 4,865 stated their ancestry as "Afrikaner". Most South African-born Australians are native English-speakers (118,147) while a large minority speak Afrikaans at home (38,415). Afrikaners are particularly concentrated in greater Perth. While just 0.2% of Australian residents in 2016 spoke Afrikaans at home, 0.6% of the residents of greater Perth (11,393) did. While 24% of South Africa-born Australians are Afrikaans speakers, census figures suggest that over one-third of South African Australians living in Western Australia are. 2021 Australian Census
The 2021 Australian census, simply called the 2021 Census, was the eighteenth national Census of Population and Housing in Australia. The 2021 Census took place on 10 August 2021, and was conducted by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). The total population of the Commonwealth of Australia was counted as 25,422,788 – an increase of 8.6 per cent or 2,020,896 people over the previous 2016 census. Results from the 2021 census were released to the public on 28 June 2022 from the Australian Bureau of Statistics website. Michelle Cowan (born 1982) is an Australian rules football coach who was the inaugural head coach of the Fremantle Football Club in the AFL Women's competition (AFLW). Early life Cowan lived in Durban, South Africa, before moving to Kambalda, Western Australia at the age of four. Coaching career After completing high school, Cowan contacted all sixteen AFL clubs to seek a coaching position. Arthur Bryce Courtenay, (14 August 1933 – 22 November 2012) was a South African-Australian advertising director and novelist. He is one of Australia's best-selling authors, notable for his book '' The Power of One''. Background and early years Arthur Bryce Courtenay was born in the Lebombo Mountains, South Africa, the son of Maude Greer and Arthur Ryder. Gavin Buckley (born 8 February 1963) is a South African-born Australian-American politician and former restaurateur who has been the mayor of Annapolis, Maryland since 2017. Born in South Africa and raised primarily in Perth, Western Australia, he moved to Annapolis in 1992, eventually opening multiple bars and restaurants in the city.
