Sjur Refsdal
Sjur Refsdal (30 December 1935 – 29 January 2009) was a Norwegian astrophysicist, born in Oslo. He is best known for his pioneer work on gravitational lensing, including the Chang-Refsdal lens. Biography In 1970 he earned a doctorate at the Institute of Theoretical Astrophysics, University of Oslo. Later that year he became professor in astrophysics at the Hamburg Observatory in Germany, and remained in that position until he retired in 2001. In 1964 and 1966 he published a series of articles on the effects and possible applications of gravitational lenses. He is particularly known for the "Refsdal Method", which describes how one may estimate the expansion rate of the Universe (Hubble constant) using the measured time-delay and lens properties of a gravitationally lensed Supernova (SN). The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters ( no, Det Norske Videnskaps-Akademi, DNVA) is a learned society based in Oslo, Norway. Its purpose is to support the advancement of science and scholarship in Norway. History The Royal Frederick University in Christiania was established in 1811. The idea of a learned society in Christiania surfaced for the first time in 1841. The city of Trondhjem had no university, but had a learned society, the Royal Norwegian Society of Sciences and Letters, established in 1760. The purpose of a learned society in Christiania was to support scientific studies and aid publication of academic papers. The idea of the Humboldt-inspired university, where independent research stood strong, had taken over for the instrumental view of a university as a means to produce civil servants. Jon Storm-Mathisen (born 16 January 1941 in Oslo) is a highly cited Norwegian neuroscientist known for his work on the morphology and immunocytochemistry of the central nervous system. He is a professor of medicine at the Department of Anatomy at the University of Oslo. Storm-Mathiesen completed his examen artium at Oslo Cathedral School in 1959, graduated from the University of Oslo in 1965, and qualified as doctor of medicine from the same university in 1976. Knut Aukland
Knut Aukland (28 March 1929 – 24 January 2014) was a Norwegian physiologist. He made significant contributions to renal physiology, particularly in fields of renal blood flow measurement and regulation and transcapillary fluid balance, through his studies of blood circulation in the kidneys. Education Aukland finished his secondary in Mandal in 1948 and took the Candidate of Medicine degree at the University of Bergen in 1954. Medical career Knut Aukland began his career as a research fellow at Ullevål Hospital in 1958, and was a researcher the rest of his career, except for a year as a physician from 1961 to 1962. He then worked at the National Institute of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. Olav Aasmund Smidsrød (9 November 1936 – 29 January 2017) was a Norwegian biochemist. He was born in Sem. He took the siv.ing. degree in 1961 and the dr.ing. degree in 1971 at the Norwegian Institute of Technology, and was a professor at the University of Trondheim from 1977, later the Norwegian University of Science and Technology.
