Sir John Barran, 1st Baronet
Sir John Barran, 1st Baronet (3 August 1821 – 3 May 1905) was a British clothing manufacturer and Liberal Party (UK), Liberal Party politician. Public life Barran was the son of John Barran and his wife Elizabeth (née Fletcher), and founded the firm of John Barran and Sons, clothing manufacturers, of Leeds. He was a justice of the peace for Leeds and the West Riding of Yorkshire and served as Mayor of Leeds from 1870 to 1871. In 1876 he was returned to Parliament as one of three representatives for Leeds (UK Parliament constituency), Leeds, a seat he held until 1885, and later sat for Otley (UK Parliament constituency), Otley from 1886 to 1895. The latter year he was created a baronet, of Chapel Allerton Hall in Chapel Allerton in the West Riding of the County of York and Queen's Gate, St Mary Abbots parish, in Kensington in the County of London. Park Square, Leeds
Park Square is a Georgian public square in central Leeds, West Yorkshire. The square is grassed over and is a traditional Georgian park. The square is in Leeds' financial quarter and is surrounded by Georgian buildings, which are occupied as offices, many by barristers and solicitors. History Park Square was part of a fashionable West End housing development, known as the Park Estates which was developed at the end of the eighteenth century for the upwardly mobile wealthy, to give them some distance from industry and the river, but within easy reach of the commercial centre. It was laid out from 1788, being completed in its original form in 1810 with houses 'well built in the modern tradition'. Somewhat grander dwellings were available in nearby Park Place. In naming the area, the word 'street' was avoided in favour of terms such as 'Row', 'Parade', 'Place' and 'Square', considered more prestigious, as had already been done in Georgian developments such as Bath, Bloomsbur ... Marmaduke D'Arcy Wyvill
Marmaduke D'Arcy Wyvill (5 March 1849 – 23 September 1918) was a British Conservative Party politician. He unsuccessfully contested the Bishop Auckland division of County Durham at the 1885 general election, losing by a wide margin to the Liberal Party candidate, whose majority was more than 44% of the votes. Wyvill did not stand for Parliament again until the 1895 general election, when he was elected as Member of Parliament (MP) for the Otley division of the West Riding of Yorkshire The West Riding of Yorkshire is one of three historic subdivisions of Yorkshire, England. Andrew Fairbairn (politician)
Sir Andrew Fairbairn (5 March 1828 – 30 May 1901) was a British Liberal politician. Fairbairn was born in Glasgow, the son of Sir Peter Fairbairn, of Woodsley House, Leeds and his wife Margaret Kennedy and educated at Geneva, at Glasgow, and at Peterhouse, Cambridge. He was called to the bar at Inner Temple in 1852. He became a captain in the Yorkshire Hussar Yeoman Cavalry and major in the 7th West Riding Rifle Volunteers. He was chairman of the engineering firm of Fairbairn, Naylor, Macpherson, & Co. of Leeds. He was Mayor of Leeds from 1866 to 1868 and chairman of Leeds School Board from 1871 to 1878. He was a member of Executive Committee of Leeds Exhibition of Fine Arts and a Royal Commissioner of the Paris Exhibition in 1868. He was a J.P and Deputy Lieutenant for the West Riding of Yorkshire and a J.P. for Leeds. He was knighted in 1868. Herbert Gladstone, 1st Viscount Gladstone
Herbert John Gladstone, 1st Viscount Gladstone, (7 January 1854 – 6 March 1930) was a British Liberal politician. The youngest son of William Ewart Gladstone, he was Home Secretary from 1905 to 1910 and Governor-General of the Union of South Africa from 1910 to 1914. Appointed whip in 1899, Gladstone was an innovator who provided a long-term strategy, kept the party from splitting over the Second Boer War, introduced more modern constituency structures; and encouraged working-class candidates. In secret meetings with Labour leaders in 1903 he forged the Gladstone–MacDonald pact. In two-member constituencies, it arranged that Liberal and Labour candidates did not split the vote. Historians give him much of the credit for the Liberal triumph in 1906, with 397 MPs and a majority of 243.
