Simpel GmbH is a Swiss bicycle manufacturer. Its bikes are sold under the "Simpel.ch" brand. The company's headquarters is Maschwanden in the Canton of Zürich. Simpel was founded in 2000 by Philip Douglas and Joachim Schneebeli. The business idea was a low-maintenance and durable city bike distributed over the Internet. To that end, Simpel used only hub gear and hub dynamos. The frame number stamped into the frame is also an e-mail address through which the owners of lost bicycles can be contacted. The Swiss Army Bicycle (also known as Armeefahrrad - Militärvelo - Militaervelo - Militärfahrrad - vélo militaire - bicicletta militare), the M0-5, and later the MO-93, was utilized by the Swiss Army from 1905 until the mid-1990s. Maschwanden is a Municipalities of Switzerland, village in the district of Affoltern (district), Affoltern in the Cantons of Switzerland, canton of Zurich (canton), Zürich in Switzerland. History Maschwanden is first mentioned in 1189 as ''Maswondon''. The Barony of Eschenbach, Baron of Eschenbach owned a castle and the village, near the current municipality, at that time. Hub Gear
A hub gear, internal-gear hub, internally geared hub or just gear hub is a gear ratio changing system commonly used on bicycles that is implemented with planetary or epicyclic gears. The gears and lubricants are sealed within the shell of the hub gear, in contrast with derailleur gears where the gears and mechanism are exposed to the elements. Changing the gear ratio was traditionally accomplished by a shift lever connected to the hub with a Bowden cable, and twist-grip style shifters have become common. Hub gear systems generally have a long and largely maintenance-free life though some are not suitable for high-stress use in competitions or hilly, off-road conditions. A hub dynamo is a small electrical generator built into the hub of a bicycle wheel that is usually used to power lights. Often the hub "dynamo" is not actually a dynamo, which creates DC, but a low-power magneto that creates AC. Most modern hub dynamos are regulated to 3 watts at 6 volts, although some will drive up to 6 watts at 12 volts. Models The market was largely pioneered by Sturmey-Archer with their Dynohub of the 1930s–1970s. This competed effectively with contemporaneous bottle dynamos and bottom-bracket generators, but the Dynohub was heavy with its steel housing and was discontinued in the 1980s.
