The Shire of Cunderdin is a local government area in the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia, about west of Merredin and about east of Perth, the state capital. The Shire covers an area of , and its seat of government is the town of Cunderdin. History On 14 December 1894, the Meckering Road District was created, changing its name to the Cunderdin Road District on 3 November 1944. On 1 July 1961, it became a Shire following the passage of the ''Local Government Act 1960'', which reformed all remaining road districts into shires. The State Register of Heritage Places is the heritage register of historic sites in Western Australia deemed significant at the state level by the Heritage Council of Western Australia. History In the 1970s, following its establishment of the National Trust of Western Australia, the National Trust created a set of classified properties, and following legislation requiring inventories, Local Government authorities in Western Australia produced a subsequent set of Municipal Inventories, which then resulted in items then being included in the state register. Shire Of Northam
The Shire of Northam is a local government area in the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia, beyond the northeastern fringe of the Perth metropolitan area centred on the town of Northam itself. The Shire covers an area of . In 2007, it merged with the Town of Northam, almost tripling its population in the process from a previous size of 3,794 (ABS 2006). On 4 November 1879, the separate Municipality of Northam was constituted to manage the town of Northam. The town expanded beyond the municipal boundaries (which were set at about ) and on 6 September 1957, the municipal boundaries were adjusted to bring all of Northam under it. 1968 Meckering Earthquake
The Western Australian town of Meckering was struck by an earthquake on 14 October 1968. The earthquake occurred at , with a moment magnitude of 6.5 and a maximum Mercalli intensity of IX (''Violent''). Total damage amounted to $2.2 million with 20–28 injured. Earthquake The shallow fault was about long around the western side of the town of Meckering. It damaged roads including the Great Eastern Highway, the Eastern Goldfields Railway and the Goldfields water pipeline. It formed a fault scarp up to high with overthrusting to the west of up to and strike-slip displacement of up to . Damage The effect of the earthquake involved structures in Perth, the capital of Western Australia 130 km west of Meckering. Youndegin, Western Australia
Youndegin is a small town east of Perth, Western Australia along the Goldfields Road in the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia. A police post existed in Youndegin in 1844; the same year several metallic objects later identified as meteorites were found not far from town during a routine police patrol. The townsite of Youndegin was gazetted in 1892. Charles Cooke Hunt was the first European to visit the area in 1864 when he established a track through the area to the eastern pastoral regions. Meckering, Western Australia
Meckering is a town east of Perth, Western Australia along the Great Eastern Highway. Meckering is located within the Shire of Cunderdin. A railway line was completed in the area in 1895 and Meckering was selected as a station site. The first name chosen for the townsite was Beebering, the Aboriginal name for the hills just north of the town. The townsite of Beebering was gazetted in 1895. The name of the town was changed to Meckering in 1897 to agree with the station name and the name for the town that was used locally. Meckering is an Aboriginal word thought to mean "moon on the water" or "good hunting". In early 1898 the population of the town was 225, 150 males and 75 females. In 1932 the Wheat Pool of Western Australia announced that the town would have two grain elevators, each fitted with an engine, installed at the railway siding. Merredin, Western Australia
Merredin is a town in Western Australia, located in the central Wheatbelt roughly midway between Perth and Kalgoorlie, on Route 94, Great Eastern Highway. It is located on the route of the Goldfields Water Supply Scheme, and as a result is also on the Golden Pipeline Heritage Trail. It is connected by public transport to Perth via the'' Prospector'' and ''MerredinLink'' rail services. History Merredin's history varies from that of other wheat-belt towns in Western Australia in the sense that it started as a stopping place on the way to the goldfields. The first European explorer into the area was the Surveyor General J. S. Roe, who travelled through the region in 1836 but was not impressed by its dryness and the low rainfall. The Shire of York is a local government area in the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia, covering an area of just beyond the eastern fringe of Perth's metropolitan area. The Shire's seat of government is the town of York. History The Shire of York was established as the York Road District on 24 January 1871. The townsite of York separated as the Municipality of York (later the Town of York) ten weeks later on 7 March 1871.
