Shipton, Gloucestershire
The twin villages of Shipton Oliffe and Shipton Solars are situated just from Cheltenham. The River Coln, just a small stream at this point, flows through the village over two fords and innumerable little water splashes, creating ornamental lakes in private properties. The population of the parish at the United Kingdom Census 2011, 2011 census was 365. The name Shipton, meaning "sheep farmstead", indicates that sheep farming occurred here long before the Norman conquest of England, Norman invasion. The Domesday Book refers to two manorialism, manors, Oliffe and Solers, each with its own Church (building), church. In 1871, they were united as one parish. Shipton, North Yorkshire
Shipton (also known as Shipton-by-Beningbrough) is a village and civil parish in the Hambleton district of North Yorkshire, England, about north-west of York. History The village was in existence at the time of the Norman invasion, as shown in the OpenDomesday on-line. In the 11th century it was known as ''Hipton'' from the Old English words ''heope'' and ''-tun'', meaning ''Rose-hip settlement''. Land in the area was held by Count Alan of Brittany around 1086 and by ''Richard de Camera''. Various landowners over the next 150 years gave land to nearby St Mary's Abbey. After the dissolution, John Shipton had leased the manor which John Redman eventually bought from the Crown outright in 1557. By 1625 the manor had passed to ''William Scudamore'' of Overton, who eventually sold it the ''Bouchier'' family of nearby Beningbrough Hall and thence through succession to the ''Dawnay'' family. Shipton is a small village in Shropshire, England. The 12th-century parish church of St James is a Grade II* Listed Building. It was rebuilt in 1589 by the Lutwyche family then owning the Hall. The church figures prominently in the history of the Samuel More family of ''Mayflower ''Mayflower'' was an English ship that transported a group of English families, known today as the Pilgrims, from England to the New World in 1620. After a grueling 10 weeks at sea, ''Mayflower'', with 102 passengers and a crew of about 30, r ...'' pilgrims fame. The More family had their seat at Shipton Hall after acquiring the Hall through marriage from the Mytton family in 1795. The Hall is constructed of limestone to an E-plan. Shipton Bellinger is a village and civil parish in Hampshire, England. Shipton Bellinger is about north-east of the town of Amesbury and north-east of the city of Salisbury. It is on the A338 road, near its junction with the A303 road. It is in the Test Valley council district but its post town is Tidworth in Wiltshire. The village is surrounded by Salisbury Plain. Winslow is a market town and civil parish designated as a town council in the north of the Unitary Authority of Buckinghamshire, England. It has a population of just over 4,400. It is located approximately south-east of Buckingham, and south-west of Bletchley (Milton Keynes). History Winslow was first recorded in a royal charter of 792–793 in which it was granted by Offa of Mercia to St Albans Abbey as ''Wineshauue'', which means ''Wine's Burial Mound'' The Domesday Book of 1086 records it as ''Weneslai''. A late Celtic copper torc has been found here, and also a silver drinking-cup of late Roman design. The 1841 census reveals the population that year was 1,333. Shipton Gorge is a village and civil parish in southwest Dorset, England, east of Bridport. Dorset County Council's 2013 mid-year estimate of the population of Shipton Gorge parish is 350. In the 2011 national census, results have been published for the parish of Shipton Gorge combined with the small neighbouring parish of Chilcombe to the east; the population of these areas was 381. In 1086 in the Domesday Book Shipton Gorge was recorded as Sepetone. The village is named after the de Gorges family who owned the land hundreds of years ago. The parish church of St Martin—which used to be a chapel of Burton Bradstock—was rebuilt in 1862, except for its west tower which dates from around 1400. The terrain surrounding the village is hilly. Shipton-on-Cherwell is a village on the River Cherwell about north of Kidlington in Oxfordshire, England. The village is part of the civil parish of Shipton-on-Cherwell and Thrupp. Manor The earliest known record of Shipton-on-Cherwell is from 1005, when an estate at Shipton was granted to the Benedictine Eynsham Abbey. Shortly before or after the Norman conquest of England an estate of five hides at Shipton seems to have been transferred from Eynsham to another Benedictine religious house, Evesham Abbey. However, after the death of Evesham's Abbot Æthelwig in 1077 or 1078 William of Normandy's half-brother Odo, Bishop of Bayeux took Shipton from Æthelwig's successor Walter. By the time of the Domesday Book in 1086, Odo had only 2½ hides at Shipton and these were let to Ilbert de Lacy. Shiptonthorpe is a village and civil parishes in England, civil parish in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It is situated approximately south-east of the market town of Pocklington and north-west of the market town of Market Weighton. According to the United Kingdom Census 2011, 2011 UK census, Shiptonthorpe parish had a population of 503, an increase on the United Kingdom Census 2001, 2001 UK census figure of 419. In Shiptonthorpe there is a petrol station, two Churches, a shop, and a Renault main dealer. Two pubs that were in the village have now closed. Shipton-under-Wychwood is an English village and civil parish in the Evenlode valley about north of Burford, Oxfordshire. The village is one of three named after the ancient forest of Wychwood. The others are Milton-under-Wychwood immediately to the west of the village and Ascott-under-Wychwood about to the east. The 2011 Census recorded Shipton-under-Wychwood's parish population as 1,244. Manors Langley About southeast of the village is the farmhouse of Langley, a largely mid-19th-century building. It is on the site of a royal hunting lodge that was built for Henry VII. Most of the Tudor monarchs stayed there when hunting in Wychwood Forest. King James I stayed at Langley in August 1605, and a French servant who died was buried at Shipton.
