Derek Shiel
Derek Shiel (April 18, 1939 – July 13, 2017) was a Dublin-born, London-based painter, sculptor, writer, and film-maker. Biography Education Shiel was educated at Fettes College, Edinburgh and the Edinburgh College of Art, where he won the Andrew Grant Scholarship for two years, completed a Diploma in Art, and was awarded a post-graduate studio and a travelling scholarship which he took in the United States of America. Career Shiel took a number of teaching appointments at the outset of his career. These included Art Tutor, Berkshire College of Art from 1963 to 1965, Art Tutor at West Sussex College of Art from 1964 to 1969, and Lecturer in Art Appreciation and Art Tutor at the City Literary Institute, London, 1965 to 1977. His lecturing career has continued in the ensuing years with events at art galleries, museums, universities and art societies, with a particular emphasis on David Jones and Sound Sculptures, subjects on which he also leads workshops. Dylan Shiel
Dylan Anthony Shiel (born 9 March 1993) is a Australian rules footballer playing for the Essendon Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). He was one of 12 underage recruits that GWS had access to as part of their list concessions. Early life Shiel attended Caulfield Grammar School, graduating in 2010, prior he attended St Bede's College in Mentone, Victoria. He was originally a supporter. He played seven games for the Dandenong Stingrays in the TAC Cup, averaging 30 disposals, kicking six goals and leading the league in contested possessions with 13 per match. Shiel played 135 games at GWS, spanning 7 seasons playing mostly as one of the key midfielders in the side. He achieved All Australian selection in the 2017 season. George Knox Shiel
George Knox Shiel (1825December 12, 1893) was an American lawyer and politician who served one term as a Democratic U.S. congressman from Oregon from 1861 to 1863. Early life Born on the island of Ireland (the entirety of which was then part of the U.K.) in 1825, Shiel migrated to the United States and settled in New Orleans. He moved to Ohio where he was admitted to the bar and began a law practice. He moved to Salem, Oregon, in 1854 and continued his law practice. He was nominated for colonel of Marion County at the 1856 Oregon Democratic Convention, and though it is unlikely he commanded any troops, he kept the title until his death. Congressional election In June 1860, Shiel was elected as a Democratic United States Representative for Oregon's at-large district. Graham Shiel
Graham Shiel (born 13 August 1970 in Galashiels, Scotland ) is the skills coach of the Scotland rugby 7's team. He is now retired from playing rugby, having made 18 appearances for the Scotland national rugby union team and once for the national sevens team. Richard Lalor Sheil (17 August 1791 – 23 May 1851), Irish politician, writer and orator, was born at Drumdowney, Slieverue, County Kilkenny, Ireland. The family was temporarily domiciled at Drumdowney while their new mansion at Bellevue, near Waterford, was under construction. Life His father was Edward Sheil, who had acquired considerable wealth in Cadiz in southern Spain and owned an estate in Tipperary. His mother was Catherine McCarthy of Springhouse, near Bansha, County Tipperary, a member of the old aristocratic family of MacCarthy Reagh of Springhouse, who in their time were Princes of Carbery and Counts of Toulouse in France. Glen Shiel ( gd, Gleann Seile; also known as Glenshiel) is a glen in the Northwest Highlands of Scotland. The glen runs approximately 9 miles from south-east to north-west, from the Cluanie Inn (216 metres, 708 feet) at the western end of Loch Cluanie and the start of Glenmoriston to sea level at the village of Shiel Bridge and Loch Duich. The northern side of the glen lies within the Kintail and Morvich estate owned by the National Trust for Scotland. :''See Glen Shiel for the much smaller Loch Shiel in Lochalsh.'' Loch Shiel ( gd, Loch Seile) is a freshwater loch situated west of Fort William in the Highland council area of Scotland. At long it is the 4th longest loch in Scotland, and is the longest to have retained a natural outflow without any regulation of its water level, being 120 m (393 ft) deep. Its nature changes considerably along its length, being deep and enclosed by mountains in the north east and shallow surrounded by bog and rough pasture in the south west, from which end the 4 km River Shiel drains to the sea in Loch Moidart near Castle Tioram. Shiel Bridge
Shiel Bridge is a village on the south east shore of Loch Duich at the foot of Glen Shiel, in the Lochalsh area of the Scottish Highlands. It is in the council area of Highland. The village of Ratagan is south east of the village. The A87 road passes through the village, continuing on along the north coast of Loch Duich, passing Dornie, Nostie and Kirkton on to Kyle of Lochalsh. The village has few amenities, but includes a caravan park & campsite, pony tours, and a small filling station. Just south of the village are the Five Sisters of Kintail, a sub-range of the Western Highlands containing three Munros (Sgùrr na Ciste Duibhe, Sgùrr na Càrnach, and Sgùrr Fhuaran). Golden eagles, red deer, and wild goats are among some of the area's native species.
