Sermitsiaq Island
Sermitsiaq Island ( da, Sadelø) is an uninhabited island in the Sermersooq municipality in southwestern Greenland. Geography Sermitsiaq is one of three mountainous islands located in the middle section of the long Nuup Kangerlua fjord, to the north of Nuuk, the capital of Greenland. The two sibling islands are Qeqertarsuaq Island and Qoornuup Qeqertarsua Island. The prominent Sermitsiaq mountain topping the island is a landmark of Nuuk, visible from most places in the city. Nuup Kangerlua
Nuup Kangerlua is a long fjord in the Sermersooq municipalities of Greenland, municipality in southwestern Greenland. It was formerly known by its colonial name as Godthaab Fjord ( da, Godthåbsfjorden), Gilbert Sound and Baal's River.Nicoll, James. Located by the island's capital, Nuuk, it is the longest fjord on the Labrador Sea coast of Greenland, and one of the longest in the inhabited part of the country. Sermersooq
Sermersooq (, da, sted med meget is, lit=place of much ice) is a municipality in Greenland, formed on 1 January 2009 from five earlier, smaller municipalities. Its administrative seat is the city of Nuuk (formerly called Godthåb), the capital of Greenland, and it is the most populous municipality in the country, with 23,123 inhabitants as of January 2020. Nuuk
Nuuk (; da, Nuuk, formerly ) is the capital and largest city of Greenland, a constituent country of the Kingdom of Denmark. Nuuk is the seat of government and the country's largest cultural and economic centre. The major cities from other countries closest to the capital are Iqaluit and St. John's in Canada and Reykjavík in Iceland. Nuuk contains a third of Greenland's population and its tallest building. Nuuk is also the seat of government for the Sermersooq municipality. In January 2021, it had a population of 18,800. The city was founded in 1728 by the Dano-Norwegian missionary Hans Egede when he relocated from the earlier Hope Colony () where he arrived in 1721. The governor Claus Paarss was part of the relocation. The new colony was placed at the Inuit settlement of Nûk and was named ''Godthaab'' ("Good Hope"). Qeqertarsuaq, meaning 'The Large Island' in the Greenlandic language ( da, Storø meaning 'big island' as well), is an uninhabited island in the Sermersooq municipality in southwestern Greenland. Geography Qeqertarsuaq is one of three mountainous islands located in the middle run of the long Nuup Kangerlua fjord, to the north of Nuuk, the capital of Greenland. Sermitsiaq (mountain)
Sermitsiaq ( da, Sadelø) ( en, Saddle) is a 1210 meters (3,970 ft) tall Greenlandic mountain in the district of Nuuk in the Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq. Location The mountain is located in the center of its namesake island and 15 km north-east of Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, in the Nuup Kangerlua ( da, Godthåbsfjorden). Its summit is crowned by a sharp west-east ridge, from which three summit points emerge. These resemble a saddle, which gave the mountain and the island its Danish name. While its south side is shaped by steep rock formations, its north side is covered with glaciers. It also harbors a waterfall which is a tourist attraction. Due to its distinctive shape the mountain is Nuuk's most prominent landmark, incorporated into its flag. The Sermitsiaq, one of two national newspapers in Greenland, is named after the mountain.
