Serge Danot
Serge Danot (7 February 1931 – 23 December 1990) was a French animator and former advertising executive. He is best known for creating the animated series, ''Le Manège enchanté'' in 1964, which became known in its 1965 English-language version, written and narrated by actor Eric Thompson for the BBC as ''The Magic Roundabout''. Danot was born in Nantes, France. As a young artist, he worked on the restoration of the Eiffel Tower and suffered an injury; while recuperating, he began practising animation. In 1969, he established his own company, called Danot Films. Le Manège Enchanté
''Le Manège enchanté'' (British English: "The Magic Roundabout", American English: "The Magic Carousel") is a popular French animated children's television series of hundreds of episodes each five minutes long, which premiered on October 5, 1963, on the first channel of the ORTF. Serge Danot created the series. The series features characters in the make-believe land of ''Bois-Joli'': Père Pivoine, the owner of the roundabout; Zébulon, a jack-in-the-box; Pollux the British dog; Azalée the cow; Ambroise the snail; Flappy the Spanish rabbit; Margote, a girl; and Jouvence Pio, a gardener who starts every sentence with "Hep Hep Hep". The footage was used by the BBC to produce an English-language version, ''The Magic Roundabout'', using scripts that bore little relation to the original story lines. Eric Thompson
Eric Norman Thompson (9 November 1929 – 30 November 1982) was an English actor, scriptwriter and stage director. He is best remembered for creating and performing the English narration for ''The Magic Roundabout'', which he adapted from the original French ''Le Manège enchanté''. Early life Eric Norman Thompson was born on 9 November 1929 in Sleaford, Lincolnshire, England, the son of Annie (née Jackson) and George Henry Thompson, a hotel waiter, and grew up in Rudgwick, Sussex, attending Collyer's School, Horsham. He trained to be an actor at the Old Vic acting school in London and joined the Old Vic theatre company in 1952. Career Thompson worked regularly for the BBC, and was a presenter of the children's television programme '' Play School'' from 1964 to 1967. The Magic Roundabout
''The Magic Roundabout'' is an English-language children's television programme that ran from 1965 to 1977. It used the footage of the French stop motion animation show ''Le Manège enchanté'' but with completely different scripts and characters. The French series, created by Serge Danot with the help of Ivor Wood and Wood's French wife, Josiane, was broadcast from 1964 to 1974 on ORTF (Office de Radiodiffusion Télévision Française). The BBC originally rejected translating the series because it was "charming... but difficult to dub into English", but later produced a version of the series using the French footage with new English-language scripts unrelated to the original storylines. Ivor Wood
Ivor Sydney Wood (4 May 1932 – 13 October 2004) was a prolific Anglo-French' animator, director, producer and writer. He was known for his work on children's television series. Born in Leeds to an English father and a French mother, his family moved to the mountains near Lyon, France, after the Second World War, where he was educated. He studied fine art in Paris, and later worked in an advertising agency in Paris, where he met Serge Danot. Together they made the acclaimed French series ''Le Manège enchanté'' (known in English as ''The Magic Roundabout''), with Wood as the animator. Following the success of ''The Magic Roundabout'' in the UK, Wood partnered with the London-based animation company FilmFair.
