Searles Valentine Wood
Searles Valentine Wood (February 14, 1798 – October 26, 1880) was an English palaeontologist. Life Wood went to sea in 1811 as a midshipman in the British East India Company's service, which he left in 1826. He then settled at Hasketon near Woodbridge, Suffolk. Wood devoted himself to a study of the mollusca of the Newer or Upper Tertiary (now Neogene) of Suffolk and Norfolk, and the Older Tertiary (Eocene) of the Hampshire Basin. His work in East Anglia focussed on the Crag deposits, "crag" being a local term for shelly sand that has been adopted by geologists. Opportunities for fossil-gathering were then plentiful, as these deposits were quarried to be used for fertiliser. These studies led to his chief work, ''A Monograph of the Crag Mollusca'' (1848–1856), published by the Palaeontographical Society. Searles Lake is an endorheic dry lake in the Searles Valley of the Mojave Desert, in northwestern San Bernardino County, California. The lake in the past was also called Slate Range Lake and Borax Lake. The mining community of Trona is on its western shore. The evaporite basin is approximately long and at its widest point, yielding 1.7 million tons annually of industrial minerals within the basin to the Searles Valley Minerals mining operations. Searles Valley is a valley in the northern Mojave Desert of California, with the northern half in Inyo County and the southern half in San Bernardino County, California, United States. Searles Valley is located between the Argus Range to the west and the Slate Range to the east. Death Valley is to the northeast. The valley contains the landform features of Searles Lake and the Trona Pinnacles. Named after John Wemple Searles. The Searles School and Chapel is located in Windham, New Hampshire, in the United States. Edward Francis Searles commissioned its design and construction, which began in 1907 and was completed in 1909. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on January 11, 1982. History and construction Searles, a millionaire born nearby in Methuen, Massachusetts, acquired of land in Windham after 1900 and hired architect Henry Vaughan to design a home, "Stanton Harcourt", now known as Searles Castle. Searles also sought to acquire a piece of land owned by the town of Windham, on which sat a rural district schoolhouse. Searles offered to exchange a nearby piece of land and to build a new school and chapel on it for the town. The cost of construction is not known but was rumored to be over $40,000. Searles High School
Searles High School, now Methuen City Hall, is a historic former school building at 41 Pleasant Street in Methuen, Massachusetts, and an excellent example of English Renaissance Revival architecture. It was designed by Henry Vaughan, a favorite of wealthy industrialist Edward Searles, who funded construction of the building in 1904. Searles was a major presence in the town, also funding construction of the Vaughan-designed Methuen Memorial Music Hall. In the atrium rests an early small demonstration version of the Emancipation Memorial, which Searles purchased from its designer, Thomas Ball. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. It now houses offices of the City of Methuen. Students attended the school from Great Barrington, the villages of Housatonic, Van Deusenville and other communities in the southern Berkshire region.
