Schmeckfest
Schmeckfest (festival of tasting) is an annual festival in Freeman, South Dakota, that celebrates the heritage and culture of Plautdietsch-speaking Mennonites from the Russian Empire who emigrated to North America starting in the 1870s. Established in 1959, Schmeckfest showcases the traditional foods, crafts and talents of the Freeman community with Mennonite food, demonstrations, displays, programs and a full-stage musical theater production. Russian Mennonites
The Russian Mennonites (german: Russlandmennoniten [lit. "Russia Mennonites", i.e., Mennonites of or from the Russian Empire], occasionally Ukrainian Mennonites) are a group of Mennonites who are descendants of Dutch people, Dutch Anabaptists who settled for about 250 years in the Vistula delta in Poland and established colonies in the Russian Empire (present-day Ukraine and Russia's Volga region, Orenburg Governorate, and Western Siberia) beginning in 1789. Freeman Academy
Freeman Academy is a private, Christian elementary school and high school in Freeman, South Dakota, that serves students in grades K-12. The school was founded in 1901 as a junior college, but now functions as only a grade, middle, and high school. The junior college closed in 1986.Waltner, Timothy L. Mennonite Cuisine
Mennonite cuisine is food that is unique to and/or commonly associated with Mennonites, a Christian denomination that came out of sixteenth century Protestant Reformation in Switzerland and The Netherlands. Because of persecution, they lived in community and fled to North America, Prussia, and Russia. Groups like the Russian Mennonites developed a sense of ethnicity, which included cuisine adapted from the countries where they lived; thus, the term "Mennonite cuisine" does not apply to all, or even most Mennonites today, especially those outside of the traditional ethnic Mennonite groups. The ''Freeman Courier'' is a weekly newspaper serving the larger Freeman, South Dakota community. Located on the eastern edge of Hutchinson County, the ''Courier''s primary readership includes eastern Hutchinson, western Turner, and southern McCook counties. History The ''Courier'' was established in 1901. The following year, Jacob J. Mendel became the editor and he owned the weekly until 1960 when he sold the ''Courier'' to brothers Glenn and Vernon Gering. The Gerings published the ''Courier'' until 1984 when they sold it to Tim L. Waltner and his wife, Mary.
