Schlumberger Brothers
Conrad Schlumberger (2 October 1878 in Gebweiler (Alsace-Lorraine) – 9 May 1936 in Stockholm) and Emile Henry Marcel Schlumberger (21 June 1884 in Gebweiler – 9 May 1953 in Val-Richer) were brothers from the region of Alsace-Lorraine, France, then a part of the German Empire. Their inventions in the area of geophysics and well logging were the beginnings of Schlumberger, Schlumberger Well Services and the entire well logging industry. Life and work Conrad and Marcel were two of six children of an affluent Alsatian Protestantism in France, Protestant family. Their father, Paul, was descended from a wealthy cotton weaving family. Gebweiler
Guebwiller (french: Guebwiller, ; Alsatian: ''Gàwiller'' ; ) is a commune in the Haut-Rhin department in Grand Est currently in north-eastern France. It was a sub-prefecture of the department until 2015. It is situated northwest of Mulhouse at the foot of the Vosges mountains. Well logging, also known as borehole logging is the practice of making a detailed record (a ''well log'') of the geologic formations penetrated by a borehole. Electric Log
Resistivity logging is a method of well logging that works by characterizing the rock or sediment in a borehole by measuring its electrical resistivity. Resistivity is a fundamental material property which represents how strongly a material opposes the flow of electric current. In these logs, resistivity is measured using four electrical probes to eliminate the resistance of the contact leads. The log must run in holes containing electrically conductive mud or water, i.e., with enough ions present in the drilling fluid. Indeed, in the borehole fluids the electrical charge carriers are only ions (cations and anions) present in aqueous solution in the fluid. Henri George Doll
Henri George Doll (13 August 1902 in Paris – 25 July 1991 in Montfort-l'Amaury, France) was a French-American scientist. Biography Doll was a leading figure in the development of oil well logging and a key technical leader of the Schlumberger oilfield services company. A graduate of the École Polytechnique and École des Mines, he married Anne Schlumberger, daughter of one of the Schlumberger brothers (Conrad), and joined their company. His contributions include the induction logging technique, and during World War II he led the development of the jeep-borne mine detector. He received a Certificate of Appreciation from the United States government, and was made an officer of the Légion d'honneur. Upon his retirement in 1967, the Schlumberger Well Surveying Corporation's research laboratory in Ridgefield, Connecticut was renamed the Schlumberger-Doll Research Center in his honor.
