The Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP) is a social democratic political party in Saint Lucia. It currently holds 13 of the 17 seats in the House of Assembly. History The party was established in 1949, backed by the Saint Lucia Workers Cooperative Union. It retained all five seats in the 1954 elections, and increased their majority to seven of the eight seats in 1957 and nine of the ten seats in 1961. In 1964, the party lost an election for the first time, with the United Workers Party, born out of a schism from within the Labour Party led by John Compton and eventual merger of the breakaway faction with the People's Progressive Party, winning six of the ten seats, with the Labour Party reduced to two. Progressive Labour Party (Saint Lucia)
The Progressive Labour Party was a political party in Saint Lucia. History The party was created by a split of the Saint Lucia Labour Party in 1981. It first contested national elections in 1982, when it finished second behind the United Workers' Party with 27.1% of the vote, but only won a single seat, taken by Jon Odlum Stanley Nicholas Jon Odlum (9 May 1936 – 19 February 2013) was a Saint Lucian politician. George Odlum
George William Odlum (24 June 1934 – 28 September 2003) was a Saint Lucian left-wing politician who served as Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister. Born in Castries, Odlum studied at Bristol University and Oxford University in the United Kingdom before returning to Saint Lucia as Permanent Secretary to the Ministry of Trade. After working for the Commonwealth Secretariat and the West Indies Associated States, he formed the Saint Lucia Forum, a left-wing pressure group. This group merged with the Saint Lucia Labour Party in time for the 1974 elections; although the Party did not win, the progress they made allowed them to take power in 1979, with Odlum as Deputy Prime Minister. Although a secret agreement originally stated that Odlum would take power after six months, his support for Cuba and similar left-wing nations led to American pressure to keep him out. Michael Pilgrim
Bryan Michael Pilgrim (born 3 January 1947) is a Saint Lucian politician. He served as 4th Prime Minister of Saint Lucia (Acting Prime Minister) after the resignation of Winston Cenac on 17 January 1982. As agreed he served for four months and on his party's loss in the elections he was succeeded in May 1982 by John Compton, leader of the United Workers' Party. Pilgrim was a member of the Progressive Labour Party. Winston Cenac
Winston Francis Cenac Q.C. (14 September 1925 – 22 September 2004) was a civil servant and politician from Saint Lucia. He was the third elected Prime Minister of independent Saint Lucia. He served as General Procurator for Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and Grenada. In 1969 he gave up public service to become a lawyer. Elected representative when the Saint Lucia Labour Party gained power in 1979, Cenac became attorney general in the Allan Louisy administration. Cenac became Prime Minister upon Louisy's resignation on 4 May 1981. He served for 8 months until he too was forced into resignation on 17 January 1982. he was replaced in his position by Michael Pilgrim.
