Slovenian Railways (, SŽ) is the state railway company of Slovenia, created in 1991. Slovenia is a member of the International Union of Railways (UIC). The UIC Country Code for Slovenia is 79. History What is now Slovenia received its first railway connection in the 1840s, when the Austrian Empire built a railway connection – Südliche Staatsbahn or Austrian Southern Railway – between its capital, Vienna, and its major commercial port, Trieste. Thus, Maribor railway station, Maribor was connected by railway to Graz Hauptbahnhof, Graz in 1844. The stretch was extended via Pragersko railway station, Pragersko to Celje railway station, Celje in 1846, and further via Zidani Most railway station, Zidani Most to Ljubljana railway station, Ljubljana in 1849. Jesenice Railway Station
The Jesenice railway station () is a railway station in the town of Jesenice, Jesenice, Jesenice, in northwestern Slovenia. It is operated by Slovenian Railways (SŽ). Characteristics The station is located in the Sava Dolinka valley, close to the borders with Austria in the north and with Italy in the west. It is the current northern terminus of the Bohinj Railway from Trieste, and also of the Tarvisio–Ljubljana Railway after the section to Tarvisio has been closed in 1967/69. From Jesenice, the Karawanks Railway line runs northwards, across the Austrian border in the Karawanks Tunnel (railway), Karawanks Tunnel opened in 1906, to Villach Hauptbahnhof. In addition to the station facilities, the building contains a bar, shops, and a restaurant. The two boarding platforms are connected by an underground pedestrian tunnel. Tarvisio ( German and ; ) is a (municipality) in the Regional Decentralization Entity of Udine, in the autonomous Friuli-Venezia Giulia region of Italy. Klagenfurt Hauptbahnhof (German for ''Klagenfurt Main station''; occasionally translated as ''Klagenfurt Central Station'') is the main railway station in Klagenfurt, capital of the Austrian state of Carinthia. It is an important railway junction in southern Austria.
