Sŵnami
Sŵnami () are a Welsh indie rock group from Dolgellau, North Wales, who sing predominantly in Welsh. They won the Welsh Language Album of the Year prize at the 2016 National Eisteddfod of Wales. Their name is a play on the word "tsunami" and the Welsh word for sound, "sŵn", to convey the idea of a wave of sound. Career Sŵnami was formed around the beginning of 2011. The band's lead singer is Bangor University graduate, Ifan Davies, who is from outside Llanegryn, Gwynedd. The other members of the band are Ifan Ywain (guitar), Gerwyn Murray (bass), Lewis Williams (drums), Gruff Jones (synth). They describe their style as "rocky with a bit of synth". The band won the ''Brwydr Y Bandiau'' (Battle of the Bands) at the 2011 National Eisteddfod in Wrexham. In 2012 they beat nine other bands to win Wakestock Battle of the Bands and secure a place on the line up of that year's Wakestock festival. Y Selar Awards
The Y Selar Awards () are awarded annually for the best Welsh language rock and pop music, by the Welsh language music magazine, ''Y Selar''. The awards ceremony is the only one specifically for Welsh language music. Background The awards were first given out in 2010. Awards are given in ten categories, with voting taking place via the ''Y Selar'' website, until the publication date of the March issue of the magazine. Every February since 2014, the awards event has taken place at a 'live' event at Aberystwyth University, initially in front of an audience of 500, increasing to 700 in 2015. The organisers claimed an audience of 1,000 in February 2016. Nominations are invited until December each year, for the twelve categories, from which a long list is chosen by the awards panel. The Welsh Music Prize is an annual music prize awarded for the best album from Wales, as voted for by members of the music industry based on artistic merit, regardless of genre, sales, or record label. It was founded by music promoter John Rostron and radio presenter Huw Stephens in 2011. Candelas (band)
Candelas are a Welsh rock band from Llanuwchllyn, North Wales. Background Candelas released their first EP ''Kim Y Syniad'' in 2011. Since being signed to the label I Ka Ching in 2013 they have released two albums and three singles. Their first album featured songs in both Welsh and English and their second album is entirely sung in Welsh. In February 2014, the band won three ''Y Selar'' awards for best Welsh language song, best long record and best band. They won best Welsh language band again in February 2015, also winning the best artwork prize. Their album ''Bodoli'n Ddistaw'' was shortlisted for the 2015 Welsh-language album of the year. Yws Gwynedd is a Welsh rock band from North Wales named for its lead singer Ywain Gwynedd. Llanegryn, Gwynedd
Llanegryn is a village and a community in Gwynedd, north-west Wales. It was formerly part of the historic county of Merionethshire (). It is located within Snowdonia () national park, south of the mountain range of the same name. Travelling by road, it is around north-east of Tywyn and south-west of Dolgellau. Wakestock (Wales)
Wakestock was Europe's largest wakeboard music festival, combining the cultures of music and wakeboarding. It was held on the Llŷn Peninsula in Wales, in between Pwllheli and Llanbedrog. Founded by Mark Durston, the festival began in Abersoch, north Wales back in 2000, when it was a wakeboard contest with a party in a car park for 800 people, and from then on played host to some of the industry's leading bands and DJs, along with the biggest wakeboard competition in Europe. In 2008 50% of the festival was sold to Kilimanjaro Live aka KiliLive.com. In 2010 the festival entered its second decade and become part of the World Wakeboard Series. Dolgellau, Gwynedd
Dolgellau (; ) is a town and community in Gwynedd, north-west Wales, lying on the River Wnion, a tributary of the River Mawddach. It was the traditional county town of the historic county of Merionethshire until the county of Gwynedd was created in 1974. Dolgellau is the main base for climbers of Cadair Idris and Mynydd Moel which are visible from the town. Dolgellau is the second largest settlement in southern Gwynedd after Tywyn and includes the community of Penmaenpool.
