A village (, ''karye'' in the Ottoman era) is the second smallest settlement unit in Turkey. The 51 regular provinces of Turkey and 30 province-level Metropolitan municipalities in Turkey, metropolitan municipalities are divided into Districts of Turkey, districts. Elazığ () is a city in the Eastern Anatolia Region, Eastern Anatolia region of Turkey, and the administrative centre of Elazığ Province and Elazığ District. Founded in and around the former city of Harput, it is located in the uppermost Euphrates valley. The plain on which the city extends has an altitude of . Kurdish Alevism
Kurdish Alevism ( or ) refers to the unique rituals, sacred place practices, mythological discourses and socio-religious organizations among Kurds who adhere to Alevism. Kurdish Alevis consider their hereditary sacred lineages as semi-deific figures, often have beliefs more rooted in nature veneration, and put more emphasis on Pir Sultan Abdal as their religious symbol, unlike Turkish Alevis who emphasize the role of Haji Bektash Veli. Some Kurdish Alevis argue that their beliefs are related to Yarsanism and Yazidism. The Kurdish Alevi population has experienced religious and ethnic discrimination, oppression and forced assimilation which have significantly impacted their identity. Ocak (Alevism)
Ocak or Odjak (, , , ) is the particular religious community which adherents of Alevism belong to. In Alevi tradition, each ocak is led by a dede, who is assumed to be descended from sayyids. Structuring Ocaks are interconnected and there is a familial connection between them. Gültan Kışanak
Gültan Kışanak (born 15 June 1961) is a Kurdish journalist, author and politician from Turkey. Kışanak was born in Elazığ in 1961. Her family is originally from Tunceli. She is a former member of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey and Head of Municipality of Diyarbakır. She has been imprisoned since October 2016. Education In 1978 Kışanak began studying at the Faculty of Education of Dicle University but was arrested in 1980 and imprisoned in the Diyarbakir Prison for two years. According to her own account, she was forced to stay in the prison warden's dog kennel for two months because she refused to stand up in his presence. In another speech, she said that she slept in a dog hut for six months. She began studying journalism at Ege University, İzmir, in 1986. On the March 16, 1988, she was arrested while protesting Saddam Hussein's attack on Halabja. She was released one year later. After her release, she graduated in 1990.
