Sørup, Ringsted Municipality
Sørup is a manor house and estate located 6 kilometres south of Ringsted, Denmark. The current Historicist main building was constructed after a fire in 1909 to designs by the architect Gotfred Tvede. It is now operated as a hotel and conference centre. History Early history Sørup was probably founded as a manor in the 13th century from land that had previously belonged to the small village of Siøthorp. The first known owner was Jacob Nielsen, who is mentioned as the owner in documents from 1381 and 1388. In 1398, it was sold by Peder Jensen Sparre to Torben Pedersen. The owner was in 1419 Karl Nielsen Sørup and in 1425 it was owned by Jacob Jep Jensen. His two sons, Jens and Per Ibsen Jepsen, inherited the estate after their father's death. Ringsted
Ringsted is a city located centrally in the Danish island of Zealand. It is the seat of a municipality of the same name. Ringsted is situated approximately from Copenhagen. History Ringsted was the site of ''Sjællands Landsting'' (lit. ''Zealand's county thing'') during the Middle Ages, which in 1584 moved to St. Bendt's church and became known as ''Sjællandsfar Landsting''. In 1805 it moved to Copenhagen and was renamed Østre Landsret, and is still active under this name. In 1131, Canute Lavard was killed in Haraldsted forest, leading to outbreaks of civil war. The church was consecrated in 1170. In front of the church is the spacious town square leading to the shopping streets with shops and boutiques. The town arms goes back to 1421. Bolle Luxdorph
Bolle Luxdorph (19 February 1643 – 5 September 1698) was a Denmark, Danish civil servant and landowner. He was ennobled under the name Luxdorph family, Luxdorph in 1679. He owned the estates Rosengaard, Sandbygaard, and Sørupgaard. He left them to his daughter, Hedevig Ulrika Luxdorph, who would later marry Adam Christopher Knuth (1687–1746), Christopher Knuth, Knuthenborg, 1st Count of Knuthenborg. His other child, Christian Luxdorph, was the father of Bolle Willum Luxdorph. Early life and travels Luxdorph was born in Copenhagen, the son of Christen Bollesen Luxdorph (died 1669) and Maren Olufsdatter Stafrofski (died 1689). He was the elder brother of Peder Luxdorph. His father was employed as economist at Herlufsholm from 1651 and he graduated from the school in 1660. Rosengaard
Rosengaard is a manor house and estate in Ringsted Municipality, Denmark. History Early history In the 14th and 15th centuries, Kværkebygaard was a manor under Ringsted Abbey. Kværkeby was, with its 30 farms, one of the larger villages in the area. Kværkebygaard was from 1340 to 1346 held in fee by Niels Jensen Kværkby. K. Tetz was lensmann from 1414 to 1420. He was in 1436 succeeded by his son, Jens Tetz Rosengaard, and from then on the estate was frequently referred to as Rosengaarden after him. Ringsted Abbey was confiscated by the Crown during the Reformation in 1536. In 1662, Lellinge was granted to supervisor of the royal kitchen (''køkkenskriver'') Hans Olufsen, Abel Cathrine's husband, as payment for an old debt. Two years later his brother, a court butcher, received Ringsted Ladegård. The farms in the villages of Kværkeby, Kongsted and Vigersted were, however, ceded to Hans Olufsen. Adam Christopher Knuth (1687–1746)
Adam Christopher (von) Knuth (28 September 1687 – 23 January 1736) was the first Count of Knuthenborg. He established the manor of Knuthenlund. He was married twice, first to Hedevig Ulrikke Luxdorph and second time to Ida Margrethe von Reventlow. Early life and education Knuth was born as the son of Eggert Christopher von Knuth and Søster Knuth née Lerche. His mother inherited the estate Årsmarke on Lolland in 1791. He studied at the Knight's Academy in Copenhagen from 1705 to 1707 and also went on a journey to the Netherlands and England in 1707. Property and titles Knuth was appointed chamberlain in 1710. His mother converted Årsmarke into a countship for her eldest son when, in 1714, Adam Christoffer von Knuth was elevated to the status of a count under Frederick IV which resulted in the change of the estate to Knuthenborg. Christian V Of Denmark
Christian V (15 April 1646 – 25 August 1699) was King of Denmark and Norway from 1670 until his death in 1699. Well-regarded by the common people, he was the first king anointed at Frederiksborg Castle chapel as absolute monarch since the decree that institutionalized the supremacy of the king in Denmark-Norway. Christian fortified the absolutist system against the aristocracy by accelerating his father's practice of allowing both Holstein nobles and Danish and Norwegian commoners into state service. As king, he wanted to show his power as absolute monarch through architecture, and dreamed of a Danish Palace of Versailles, Versailles. Peder Griffenfeld
Count Peder Griffenfeld (before nobility, ennoblement Peder Schumacher) (24 August 1635 – 12 March 1699) was a Danish statesman and royal favourite. He became the principal adviser to King Christian V of Denmark from 1670 and the ''de facto'' ruler of the dual kingdom of Denmark-Norway in the first half of the 1670s. In 1673 he was appointed as Chancellor of Denmark, elevated to count, the highest aristocratic rank in Denmark-Norway, and received the Order of the Elephant, the country's highest order. At the behest of his enemies at court, Griffenfeld was arrested in early 1676 and convicted of treason, a charge that historians agree was false. He was imprisoned for 22 years, mainly at Munkholmen in Norway. The Dano-Swedish War of 1658–1660 was a war between Denmark–Norway and Sweden, with the former backed by the Dutch Republic and Poland. It is known in Denmark as the Second Karl Gustav War (), in Norway as Bjelkes Feud () in Sweden as Karl Gustav's Second Danish War (), and in the Netherlands as the Swedish-Dutch War ().
