Sökmen (Artuqid)
Sökmen (also called Moinuddin Sokman, Muʿīn ad-Dīn Soqman or Soqman ibn Artuq) was a Turkish emir of the Seljuk Empire in the early 12th century. History Origin His father was Artuk, a commander in the Seljuk Empire. He supported Tutush I, a member of the Seljukid house whose province was Greater Syria. As such, Artuk and his son Sökmen aided Tutush in the battle of Ain Salm against the rebellious Suleiman ibn Qutalmish. They were then rewarded with the governorship of Jerusalem. After Artuk's death in 1091, Sökmen and his brother Ilghazi became the co-governors of the city. In 1093, a revolt broke out and an unknown group captured the Tower of David. Pitched battles were fought in the street by the Turkomans as the brothers struggled to get the situation under control. In Anatolia and Syria Sökmen spent much of his time in Anatolia and Syria. Sökmen el-Kutbî (also spelled al-Qutbi) was a Türkmen military commander, a former slave ''amir'' in the service of the Seljuks, who became the founder of the Shah-i Arman dynasty, also known as the ''Shah-Armens'' or ''Ahlatshahs''. Early life He was a subordinate and ghilman (slave commander) of Seljukid prince Kutbüddin İsmâil İlarslan (a cousin of Malik-Shah I). After his superior was killed in a battle, upon the request of the citizens, he moved to Ahlat (now a district center in Bitlis Province of Turkey, then an important Islamic cultural center) where he fought against Marwanids and captured the city on behalf of the Great Seljuk Empire in 1100. Beylik Sökmen captured the nearby settlements to the north and west of the Lake Van and increased his power of influence. Sökmen II
Nāṣir al-Dīn Sökmen II (died 1185) was the '' Shāh-i Arman'', the ruler of the Turkoman principality centred on Ahlat, from 1128 until his death. He married Shāhbānū, daughter of ′Izz al-Dīn Saltuq II, ruler of the Saltukids of Erzurum. He and his wife both engaged in major building projects that brought the Shāh-i Armanid state to its zenith. In 1164, Shāhbānū rebuilt the ruined citadel of Ahlat and the roads leading into the city, replaced the old wooden bridges with new stone ones and constructed large new inns inside the city. She employed an engineer named Qaraqush, who completed the massive construction project in only a few months. None of these works have been survived, all being destroyed after the siege of Ahlat in 1229–30, when the '' Khwarazmshah'' Jalāl al-Dīn captured the city. İhsan Lâtif Sökmen, also known as Ali İhsan Pasha (1873 – 26 December 1955) was a Turkish people, Turkish soldier and politician who is notable for his participation in World War I. Biography After graduating from the Ottoman Military College, Military Academy in 1895, he took part in the 1897 Greco-Turkish War (1897), Greco-Turkish War and the Balkan Wars. He served as the Military Attaché in Athens, the Chief of Staff of the Yemen Army Corps, the Commander of the Edremit Division, and the Commander of the Mus Division. When World War I began Caucasus Front (Russian Republic), Caucasus Front's 9th Corps in carrying out the tasks Battle of Sarikamish, Sarikamish battle during the Russian army fell prisoners on 22 December 1914, and was exiled to Siberia. Tayfur Ata Sökmen (1892 – 3 March 1980) was the president of the Hatay State during its existence (5 September 1938 – 23 July 1939). Life He was born in Gaziantep to a Turcoman family. He graduated from the Rüştiye (high school) in Kırıkhan. During French Mandate in Hatay, he participated in opposition movement. But when he was sentenced with death penalty he escaped to Turkey. Although he was pardoned in 1926, next year he escaped to Turkey once more. In 1935 he was elected MP from Antalya Province. When Hatay was declared an independent state, Sökmen was elected as the president of the Republic. However soon Hatay merged to Turkey. In later years Sökmen was elected MP from Antalya and Hatay Province up to 1954. According to Turkish constitution of 1961, former presidents had a seat in the Turkish Senate.
