Södertälje Municipality (''Södertälje kommun'') is a municipality in Stockholm County in east central Sweden. Its seat is located in the city of Södertälje. It borders to Lake Mälaren in the north and the Baltic Sea in the south, and within the Stockholm County to Nykvarn Municipality and Salem Municipality and also border Södermanland County and its municipals Gnesta and Trosa. The municipality was created 1967–1971 through the amalgamation of the former ''City of Södertälje'' with large rural and suburban areas surrounding it. In 1999, it was split when a new entity, Nykvarn Municipality, was detached from Södertälje Municipality. Economy Two big industries dominate Södertälje. Salem Municipality
Salem Municipality (''Salems kommun'') is a municipality in Stockholm County in east central Sweden. The name traces its origins from ''Slæm'' in the 13th century, but was changed to Salem in the 17th century, inspired by the Biblical name of Jerusalem. Its seat is located in Salem. History Like the rest of the areas around Lake Mälaren, Salem has a significant amount of ancient remains, as far back as the Stone Age. The church of Salem traces its foundation to the 12th century. Just like its eastern municipal neighbour Botkyrka, Salem traces its history back to the legendary Saint Botvid, who lived in the area sometime between 1050-1120. Mölnbo () is a locality situated in Södertälje Municipality, Stockholm County, Sweden with 1,052 inhabitants in 2010. Community & Service The range of services is very limited in Mölnbo. The proximity to Gnesta and Södertälje, as well as the relative proximity to Stockholm is a contributing factor to the limited range of services. Stores tend to open in larger cities instead. Some major chains of stores, for example Konsum (nowadays COOP) have tried to open grocery stores in Mölnbo, but failed to keep open due to the limited population. Today, there is one store in Mölnbo, and it is combined with a pizzeria, owned by the local celebrity Abbe. The store is called "Abbes Livs" and the pizzeria is called "Abbes Pizzeria". Järna, Södertälje Municipality
Järna is a locality situated in Södertälje Municipality, Stockholm County, Sweden with 6,377 inhabitants in 2010. Järna has long been the centre of the anthroposophical movement in Sweden, and there is a private clinic, several schools and other institutions affiliated with the movement. A lot of the buildings, in the nearby village of Ytterjärna, are designed by the Danish-born anthroposophical architect Erik Asmussen (1913–1998), including the Cultural Centre in Ytterjärna, which in 2001 was voted the second best-liked modern building in Sweden. Hölö
Hölö is a locality situated in Södertälje Municipality, Stockholm County, Sweden with 1,400 inhabitants in 2010. It lies near the lake Långsjön and is slightly north of Vagnhärad and south of Södertälje. History Hölö stopped being its own municipality in 1971, when it was incorporated with Södertälje municipality. Formerly Hölö municipality reached over a greater area near the western bank of Himmerfjärd. The municipality of Mörkö had been included in Hölö municipality since 1952. Hölö's probably most important industry was Edeby marble quarry which didn't only export its green-grey marble to Stockholm but also to other European countries. Södertälje Canal
The Södertälje Canal ( sv, Södertälje kanal) is a canal connecting the lake Mälaren with the Baltic Sea, at the city of Södertälje. It is 5.2 km long, and it has one lock. The size of this lock is the largest in Scandinavia by allowed ship size. The lock is 135 m long and 17 m wide. The water level difference between Mälaren and the Baltic Sea is not large, on average 0.6 m (2 ft). This is the main shipping route into the lake Mälaren. History In the Viking age the passage was navigable by boats, but the Post-glacial rebound made it unusable. In the year 1819 a lock was finished, so boats could use the canal.
