Söderportgymnasiet
Söderportgymnasiet, an upper secondary school, was opened in 1875 in order to accommodate the increasing number of students in Kristianstad. The school was built on a site previously occupied by the southern gate of the city walls, hence the current name Söderportgymnasiet. In 1878 the school was named ''Högre allmänna läroverket'', and in 1968 renamed ''Söderportskolan'' in connection with a nationwide reform. In 2002 the school received its current name to better illustrate the level of education conducted there (Swedish ''gymnasium'' = upper secondary school). In the beginning of the 20th century the school had some 300 students. In 1907 two girls graduated from the school, albeit as external candidates, and in 1923 it became fully co-educational. Today the school has 1100 students, of which about 50 are in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, which started there in 2000. Kristianstad Municipality () is a municipality in Skåne County in southernmost Sweden. Its seat is located in the city Kristianstad. The present municipality was created in three steps during the last nationwide local government reform, and it has the largest area of the municipalities of Skåne County. In 1967 a number of rural municipalities were merged into the ''City of Kristianstad''. In 1971 more former units were added and the city became a unitary municipality. Finally in 1974, the last amalgamations took place, and the municipality reached its present size. The number of original entities (as of 1863) is 35. The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) is a two-year educational programme primarily aimed at 16-to-19-year-olds in 140 countries around the world. The programme provides an internationally accepted qualification for entry into higher education and is recognized by many universities worldwide. It was developed in the early-to-mid-1960s in Geneva, Switzerland, by a group of international educators. After a six-year pilot programme that ended in 1975, a bilingual diploma was established.
