Sånga Church
Sånga Church () is a medieval Lutheran church on Färingsö island, close to Svartsjö Palace in the Diocese of Stockholm (Church of Sweden), Diocese of Stockholm in Stockholm County, Sweden. History and architecture Although mentioned in written sources for the first time in 1308, the church evidently is much older, dating from the 1170s. It was expanded during the 14th and 15th centuries and transformed from a Romanesque architecture, Romanesque church into a Gothic architecture, Gothic. Both externally and internally, the church retains much of its medieval appearance. The tall spire is from 1730 but replaced an earlier spire of the same form. The church's windows have been enlarged in phases, but no other major alterations have been made to the exterior of the church. Church murals or church wall paintings are mostly medieval paintings found in several Swedish churches. They usually adorn the vaults or walls of the buildings. In Swedish they are sometimes referred to as ''kalkmålningar'', literally "lime paintings", since they were often painted using lime as the binding medium for the paint. The earliest church murals in Sweden date from the first decades of the 12th century and are Romanesque in style. The majority of these are found in the southern part of Sweden, where they were commissioned by members of the royalty and nobility of the time. ; ) is an oil-on-panel painting depicting a halo display, an atmospheric optical phenomenon, observed over Stockholm on 20 April 1535. It is named after the sun dogs () appearing on the upper right part of the painting. While chiefly noted for being the oldest depiction of Stockholm in colour, it is arguably also the oldest Swedish landscape painting and the oldest depiction of sun dogs. The original painting, which was produced shortly after the event and traditionally attributed to Urban målare ("Urban hePainter"), is lost, and virtually nothing is known about it. However, a copy from 1636 by Jacob Heinrich Elbfas held in Storkyrkan in Stockholm is believed to be an accurate copy and was until recently erroneously thought to be the restored original.
