São Romédio Community
The São Romédio Community () is an historic neighbourhood in Caxias do Sul, Brazil. History The community was founded in mid-1876 during the Italian colonization of the Rio Grande do Sul. (Some immigrants had already arrived at Caxias do Sul before 1876.) The majority of immigrants came from Sanzeno, Trentino. Caxias Do Sul
Caxias do Sul () is a city in Rio Grande do Sul, Southern Brazil, situated in the state's mountainous Serra Gaúcha region. Saint Romedius (). Though the son of a nobleman, as a young man he withdrew to a rock cave in order to meditate. After the death of his parents, he gave away all of his possessions and established himself in the Val di Non () in Trentino. History Romedius was the son of a noble family, born in the area of a Roman military station, near Innsbruck, in what is now Thaur, Austria. After a pilgrimage to Rome, Romedius gave all his possessions to the Church, withdrawing into a hermitage in some grottoes in the Val di Non. he was accompanied by two companions, Abraham and David. Alessandro Carmelo Ruffinoni is the retired Roman Catholic Diocese of Caxias do Sul, bishop of Caxias do Sul and a Scalabrinians, Scalabrinian priest. Biography Born in Piazza Brembana in 1943, fourth of five children, he completed his studies between Rezzato and Cermenate. He entered the Scalabrinians, Scalabrinian Congregation in 1961, to be ordained priest on 8 March 1970. He left Italy for Brazil as a missionary in following November. History Of Caxias Do Sul
The history of Caxias do Sul, one of the main municipalities in the Federative units of Brazil, state of Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil, officially begins with the Italian immigration in Rio Grande do Sul, Italian colonization of the region, which started in 1875. However, indigenous tribes had lived there since ancient times, but were displaced to make way for the European settlers. The beginning of the settlement was difficult, being an area of thick virgin forest. However, quickly the forest was opened up and the first crops and livestock began to bear fruit.
