Origin It is usually originated from the present participle form ("szabó") of the verb "szab", meaning to "cut cloth to size", which then became a noun denoting the occupation of a tailor. Herma Szabo (22 February 1902 – 7 May 1986) was an Austrian figure skater who competed in ladies' singles and pairs. As a single skater, she became the 1924 Olympic champion and a five-time world champion (1922–1926). She also won two world titles in pairs with Ludwig Wrede. Lőrinc Szabó de Gáborján ( ; Miskolc, 31 March 1900 – Budapest, 3 October 1957) was a Hungarian poet and literary translator. Biography He was born in Miskolc as the son of an engine driver, Lőrinc Szabó sr., and Ilona Panyiczky. The family moved to Balassagyarmat when he was 3 years old. He attended school in Balassagyarmat and Debrecen. He studied at the ELTE in Budapest where he befriended Mihály Babits. He didn't finish his studies; instead he began to work for the literary periodical ''Az Est'' in 1921, shortly after he married Klára Mikes, the daughter of Lajos Mikes. He worked there until 1944. Between 1927 and 1928 he was a founder and editor of the periodical ''Pandora''. His first published poems appeared in the 1920s in the '' Nyugat'' ("The West"). Krisztina Szabó is a Hungarian-Canadian mezzo-soprano opera singer who has performed in a number of operatic roles. A graduate of the University of Western Ontario, Szabó finished her postgraduate studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. Károly Ferenc Szabó (August 29, 1943 – January 25, 2011) was a Hungarian-Romanian politician and Member of the European Parliament. He was a member of the Democratic Union of Hungarians in Romania (UDMR), and served as Senator for Satu Mare County from 1990 to 2008. Szabó became an MEP as part of the European People's Party–European Democrats, on January 1, 2007, with Romania's accession to the European Union. Karolina Szabó (born November 17, 1961) is a retired Hungarian athlete, who specialized in the long-distance running events. Born in Dunaföldvár, Tolna, she represented Hungary in the marathon at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, finishing 13th, and the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, finishing 11th. Yozhef Yozhefovich Sabo (; ; born 29 February 1940) is a Ukrainian former football player and manager. Club career Sabo began to play in 1954 for a team of Uzhhorod bread factory and his first coach was Zoltan Gyorfi (). Later until August 1957 he played as a forward for Khimik Kalush in competitions among KFK of the Ukrainian SSR. From September 1957 to May 1959 Sabo played in Class B (second tier) for Spartak Uzhhorod. Sabo made his name as a player at Dynamo Kyiv, appearing at the club from June 1959 to 1969. Background His first contribution to science was an essay on metallurgy, in which subject he had received special training. József Szabó (born 10 March 1969) is a retired Hungarian swimmer. He competed in three individual events at the 1988 Olympics and won a gold medal in the 200 m breaststroke; he placed fourth in the 400 m and 24th in the 200 m medley events.
