The Coalition of the Radical Left – Progressive Alliance (), best known by the syllabic abbreviation SYRIZA ( ; ; a pun on the Greek adverb , meaning "from the roots" or "radically"), is a Centre-left politics, centre-left to Left-wing politics, left-wing List of political parties in Greece, political party in Greece. Alexis Tsipras
Alexis Tsipras (, ; born 28 July 1974) is a Greek politician who served as Prime Minister of Greece from 2015 to 2019. A left-wing figure, Tsipras was leader of the List of political parties in Greece, Greek political party Syriza from 2008 to 2023. Tsipras is the fourth prime minister who has governed in the course of the 2010s Greek government-debt crisis. 2023 Syriza Leadership Election
A leadership election was held in September 2023 within Syriza after the resignation of leader Alexis Tsipras following the June 2023 legislative election. It was won by Stefanos Kasselakis after two rounds of voting. Background Previous leadership election In January 2022, Alexis Tsipras, then president of SYRIZA - PS, proposed to the party's political council the election of the leader and the central committee directly by its members, which was accepted and voted through despite the disagreement of the internal party opposition group "Umbrella" from the party congress in April with 70% of the votes. On 15 May elections were held for the presidency of the party, which were open to members and friends of the party, while only those who had been members before 21 March were admitted to vote for the central committee. Sokratis Famellos (; born 27 March 1966) is a Greek politician and former chemical engineer who has been the Syriza, president of Syriza since November 2024. June 2023 Greek Legislative Election
Snap parliamentary elections were held in Greece on 25 June 2023. All 300 seats in the Hellenic Parliament were contested. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis called for the snap vote after the May 2023 Greek parliamentary election, May 2023 elections did not result in any party gaining a majority, although his centre-right New Democracy (Greece), New Democracy made unanticipated gains and increased its share of the vote. As a result, no coalition government was formed by any of the parties eligible to do so. In contrast to the May elections, the June vote used a majority bonus system, making a majority government more likely. On 25 May 2023, as required by Greece's constitution, President Katerina Sakellaropoulou appointed Ioannis Sarmas as caretaker prime minister until the formation of the next government following the elections.
