Syrian Peace Process
The Syrian peace process is the ensemble of initiatives and plans to resolve the Syrian civil war. Peace talks were unsuccessful from 2011 until the fall of the Assad regime at the end of 2024. Between December 2024 and March 2025, all major revolutionary factions of the Syrian revolution united to form the Syrian transitional government. Plans for a negotiated peace between Ba'athist Syria and the Syrian opposition to Bashar al-Assad were ultimately unsuccessful. They began in 2011 with unsuccessful initiatives by the Arab League, the UN Special Envoy on Syria, Russia and Western powers. The negotiating parties were representatives of the Syrian regime and the Syrian opposition. The Democratic Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (DAANES) was excluded at the insistence of Turkey. Kofi Annan
Kofi Atta Annan (8 April 193818 August 2018) was a Ghanaian diplomat who served as the seventh secretary-general of the United Nations from 1997 to 2006. Annan and the UN were the co-recipients of the 2001 Nobel Peace Prize. 2024 Syrian Opposition Offensives
On 27 November 2024, a coalition of Syrian opposition to Bashar al-Assad, Syrian revolutionary factions called the Military Operations Command led by Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and supported by allied Turkey, Turkish-backed groups in the Syrian National Army (SNA) launched an offensive against the Ba'athist Syria, Ba'athist regime's armed forces in Idlib Governorate, Idlib, Aleppo Governorate, Aleppo and Hama Governorates in Syria. Syrian Constitutional Committee
The Syrian Constitutional Committee was a United Nations-facilitated constituent assembly process that sought, in the context of the Syrian civil war, to reconcile the Ba'athist regime of President Bashar al-Assad and the Syrian opposition, by amending the current or adopting a new Constitution of Syria. The UN hopes that this would lead to negotiations which would subsequently lead to a peaceful end of the conflict, which had been raging for more than eight years by the time of the committee's formation. The Constitutional Committee was formed with the formal approval of both parties involved—namely the Government of the Syrian Arab Republic and the Syrian Negotiation Commission representing the opposition, with the facilitation of the United Nations. Astana
Astana is the capital city of Kazakhstan. With a population of 1,423,726 within the city limits, it is the second-largest in the country after Almaty, which had been the capital until 1997.
