Swiz Mix
Swiz was an American hardcore punk band formed in 1987 in Washington, D.C., United States. History The founding members were Shawn Brown (vocals) and Ramsey Metcalf (guitar), who later added Nathan Larson (bass), Alex Daniels (drums) and Jason Farrell (guitar). Before Swiz formed, Brown had been the original vocalist for Dag Nasty. Metcalf departed shortly after the band recorded its first demo and Swiz continued as a four-piece. Getting started The band started with the goal to move away from the Revolution Summer movement that had emerged with the Washington, D.C. punk scene in 1985. Members felt the intensity and aggressiveness had decreased with the new wave of punk music and felt they resonated more with hardcore punk. The band's first show together was on June 25, 1987 and did five more before deciding Ramsey was not a good fit. They proceeded to put out an E.P and begin touring. Circus Lupus
Circus Lupus was a post-hardcore band based in the area of Washington, D.C. The band originally formed in Madison, Wisconsin, where one-time Ignition and Soul Side bassist Chris Thomson met guitarist Chris Hamley and drummer Arika Casebolt while attending school. The name "Circus Lupus" comes from an SCTV sketch about "Circus Lupus, the Circus of Wolves", a mock TV commercial for an entirely wolf-filled traveling circus, with graphics of wolves on trapeze swings and other circus apparatus. Reg Shrader initially played bass with the band. He was replaced by Seth Lorinczi, as the band was making its transition from Madison to Washington. The band released two full-length albums and a seven-inch single on Dischord Records. Moss Icon is an American post-hardcore band formed in late 1986 in Annapolis, Maryland, United States. Its original lineup comprised vocalist Jonathan Vance, guitarist Tonie Joy, bassist Monica DiGialleonardo, and drummer Mark Laurence. Alex Badertscher joined as second guitarist in 1990. Moss Icon is considered to be an early influence on the hardcore punk splinter genre known as post-hardcore, as well as on the eventual development of emo, although the band members themselves have repeatedly denied knowingly contributing to the latter genre in any way. Soulside
Soulside, also spelled Soul Side, was an American post-hardcore band from the greater Washington, D.C. area. The original name of the band was Lunchmeat which was formed by high school students Bobby Sullivan, Chris Thomson, Scott McCloud and Alexis Fleisig in 1985. Lunchmeat played their last show under that name on August 29 of the same year as the group went on hiatus while the members went to college. The next summer the band reunited under the name Soulside recording an album at Inner Ear with Ian MacKaye, Don Zientara, and Eli Janney. The album was the second release on Sammich Records. At the end of the summer, the band again went on hiatus as the members returned to college except for Thomson who had decided not return to college and formed Ignition with Chris Bald. Comet Ping Pong (often abbreviated as Comet) is a pizzeria, restaurant, and concert venue located on Connecticut Avenue in Washington, D.C.'s Chevy Chase neighborhood. Owned by James Alefantis, Comet has received critical acclaim from ''The Washington Post'', '' The Washingtonian'', ''New York'' magazine, the '' DCist'', and Guy Fieri of Food Network's ''Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives''. Comet was founded in 2006 by Alefantis and Carole Greenwood, both of whom also co-owned another restaurant on the same block. Bluetip
Bluetip was an American rock band from Washington, D.C., forming in March 1995 by ex-members of Swiz. They released four albums, an EP, and a number of singles before splitting up in January 2002. Originally, the band was to be named The Ohio Blue Tip, however the name was shortened to Bluetip early on. In 2001, when Farrell moved to New York, the band eventually folded. Farrell and Joe Gorelick from Bluetip continued making music in a very similar vein under the band name Retisonic, starting in 2002, with Jim Kimball on bass. The band Red Hare was formed in 2013 by three former members of Bluetip (Farrell, Gorelick, and Dave Stern) and three former members of both Swiz and Sweetbelly Freakdown (Farrell, Stern, and Shawn Brown. Shudder To Think
Shudder to Think was an American alternative rock band. Formed in 1986, they released three albums on the Washington, D.C.-based label Dischord Records, and two on Epic Records. Their early work was largely influenced by post-hardcore although they gradually drew upon a wide range of stylistic influences, including pop music and glam metal. History The band's first lineup was Craig Wedren (vocals and guitar), Chris Matthews (guitar), Stuart Hill (bass) and Mike Russell (drums). Revolution Summer was a social movement within the hardcore punk scene of Washington, D.C. that occurred during the summer of 1985. Background and creation From the late-1970s through the early-1980s, Washington, DC had a thriving hardcore punk community. The short-lived scene is one of the most influential in the United States. Bad Brains were an early influence on the speed of hardcore punk and Straight edge came to fruition in the wake of Minor Threat. By 1984, the scene was awash in violence; skinheads came to hardcore punk concerts in DC to fight. Shows devolved into vandalism. The tight-knit community around Dischord Records, who helped create the scene, decided to leave it and create a new alternative music scene in the city. Hardcore Punk
Hardcore punk (also known as simply hardcore) is a punk rock music genre and subculture that originated in the late 1970s. It is generally faster, harder, and more aggressive than other forms of punk rock. Its roots can be traced to earlier punk scenes in San Francisco and Southern California which arose as a reaction against the still predominant hippie cultural climate of the time. It was also inspired by Washington D.C. and New York punk rock and early proto-punk. Nathan Larson (musician)
Nathan Peter Larson (born September 12, 1970) is an American guitarist, singer, songwriter, and author. He came to prominence in the 1990s as the guitarist for the rock group Shudder to Think. He has since worked on many film score compositions. He is married to Nina Persson, the lead singer of the Swedish rock band The Cardigans, and the couple have collaborated on several musical projects. Larson is responsible for arranging 12-hour experimental music concert events, and is one of the founders of the LUMEN PROJECT. In May 2011, Larson's debut novel, '' The Dewey Decimal System'', was published by Akashic Books. The second book in the series was published summer 2012, and is entitled ''The Nervous System.''
