Swapan Dasgupta
Swapan Dasgupta (born 3 October 1955) is an Indian journalist and politician. He is influential within the Indian right wing, writing columns for leading English dailies espousing Hindu nationalism. He was a nominated member of the Rajya Sabha. In 2015, Dasgupta was conferred with the Padma Bhushan for his contribution to literature and education. Early life and education Dasgupta was born into a Bengali Baidya family on 3 October 1955 in Calcutta, West Bengal. He received his schooling from St. Paul's School and La Martiniere Calcutta before graduating from St. Stephen's College in 1975, and was awarded the prestigious Inlaks scholarship. He earned his MA and Ph.D. from the School of Oriental and African Studies and returned to India briefly in 1979 to take up a management position at Calcutta Chemical Company, a family. Calcutta Chemical Company
The Calcutta Chemical Company was a pharmaceutical company established in the city of Calcutta (now Kolkata) in 1916 by K.C. Das, B.N. Maitra, and R.N. Sen. Its founding was at the time of the Swadeshi Movement in Bengal, where the spirit of entrepreneurship was encouraged in opposition to British manufactured goods. Although it manufactured a variety of products, the company was best known for being the originators of Margo soap and Neem Toothpaste, as well as Lavender Dew Powder. It was primarily owned and run by S.C. Dasgupta and his wife, Rekha. Rekha Dasgupta took the reins after her husband’s death in 1979, and eventually sold the company to Shaw Wallace. It was then further sold to German consumer goods company Henkel, which incorporated Henkel India. The ''Ram Rath Yatra'' was a political and religious rally that lasted from September to October 1990. It was organised by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its Hindu nationalist affiliates, and led by the then-president of the BJP, L. K. Advani. The purpose of the ''yatra'' was to support the agitation, led by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and its affiliates in the Sangh Parivar, to erect a temple to the Hindu deity Rama on the site of the Babri Masjid. The ''masjid'', or mosque, had been built in the city of Ayodhya following the Mughal conquest of the region in 1528. According to hearsay, it was built over a temple dedicated to Rama, and stood on the site of his birth.
